I'm one of the those programmers who periodically need to crank something loud and violent in order to shut out the world and get down to business.

Often I listen to Rage Against the Machine - their self title album from '92. It really gets me over a lull and back into a good session of programming.

Does anyone else have a favourite loud album they use to program? I need to expand my mp3 collection here at work (I program mostly in Perl at home, but here at work I've had to learn VB.NET - I fought it for months, I'm actually starting to enjoy what a challenge it is to master, but I need more tunes).

On a side note, I work in the Forestry industry and I spent a summer on a clearing saw cutting down trees to thin out aerial seeded pine plantations. On rough days I'd feed my discman ear buds into my hard hat's ear protection head set and listen to Rage Against the Machine. That album can really get a person raged up enough to cut down a lot of trees I tell ya. (I had a 1.25 hectare a day quota). [insert chainsaw smilie here]

For something heavy but a bit more progressive to get the brain going... look into The Mars Volta. Also...
  • Tool or A Perfect Circle
  • Old school Metallica
  • Korn
  • Black Sabbath
  • At the Drive In

"oooh, I've seen fire, and I've seen arayhain. Ahve seen sunny dahys that I thought would never eehend. Ahve seen lonleh times when I coul' not find a friend.."

Haha, fuck James Taylor.

Get some old school Metallica (before they sucked ass), some disturbed, that new Three Days Grace song - any of that will get you in the ass-kicking mood.

It really doesnt get anymore loud and violent than the almighty Slayer. Also check out Throwdown, they're badass. If you want any heavy stuff let me know, that's really all I listen to.

Thanks guys. I'll give your suggestions a try.

I like James Taylor, but wouldn't get much programmed while listening to him. I do manage to work quite well listening to Johnny Cash at times though!

Can't program with anything containing lyrics running in the background.
The voices in my head are distracting enough.

I have that problem when doing meticulous things like mathematics and reading a textbook.

Doing anything interweb related, I can listen to anything. But Trance is preferred in all I do.

In Flames?

Hell yes. Clayman, Come Clairty, Whoracle, Jester Race, and colony are all stupid good. I like STYE and RTR less, but they still kick the ass of other metal bands.

They rocked the house down when I saw them live.

I actually named my first company after an in flames song. That's how big a fan I am.
