I am not an authority on the matter. I have, however, scoured Wicked Fire for posts about the Google sandbox. Although I haven't found a conclusive answer, some people seem to suggest an aged domain is less likely to become sandboxed. However, your mileage may vary. My understanding is that what you do to your site is a huge factor (e.g. type and extent of link building, quality of links, etc.).
