why do you suppose so many bit torrent sites are still open after the pirate bay fiasco?

The prosecution of their case has been a big joke and no ruling has been made yet. Wait until the verdict has been handed down and then see what happens after that.

I'm just wondering because I considered opening a torrent site years ago but after reading up about their situation I decided against it. But I see all these sites surviving years later, presumably making some form of revenue, and wonder if I made the right call.

Hard to say. I personally don't see anything wrong with simply providing search functionality, but I also wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of an RIAA or movie industry lawsuit.

Pirate Bay doesn't really make much money past keeping their site running. That's one of the reasons the prosecutors looked like dumbasses during the trial.

running TPB into bankruptcy would be a symbolic victory at best to the average joe public. (Think RIAA...)

i know of about 10-20 torrent sites that have shut down in the past month, most were hosted in sweden too.

Google provides the same torrent searching functionality, if you know how to use it. Where's their lawsuit?
