<br> doesn't work in wordpress post?

I'm experiencing a problem in a wordpress post where <br> doesn't work. I'm using html(the button near post) to edit it, but it simply won't edit. I've tried ways around it such as <p></p> and just editing it in the post part of wordpress, but it always reformats it so there is only one break line between these paragraphs i have. Does anyone know how to get around this?

I haven't tested this but I'm guessing that when using the br tag in wordpress you need to use the newer compliant version <br /> with the forward slash closing bracket.
