Someone bought the .com version of my wife's name 3 years ago. Since then he has tried every year to sell it to us. We offered him $100 and he keeps asking $5000. Needless to say we havent paid.

Now the domain is expiring on 5/12/11 and so far we havent heard from him in the last 8 months and he hasnt renewed the domain as of yet.

What is the best way to go about trying to buy this domain now?

Put in a backorder now? Wait for the 12th and try to buy the domain at a registrar?

Is there a secret trick or something. I just didnt want to show this guy we were interested in the domain so he has the chance to renew and we get screwed again.

Any suggestions here?

thanks

By no means am I an expert, but basically, the more backorders you put in at different services the better your chances of catching it. If the current registrar has a backorder service, start with that one b/c presumably they would honor their own before releasing it. I've had success with Pool, Snapnames, Namejet, and Caught.co.uk.

Find the specific drop service (namejet, godaddy, etc) that is handling it - then put a backorder in there. I am not certain if that is critical - but would be better I would imagine to go with the company that is handling it.

Who was it registered with?

chances are they will renew now are during the redemption period if your wife's name is remotely common. the fact that you send offers every year drastically increases the chances that the owner will value the name enough to renew. if they do really let it expire, then prior to that date you should have your backorder placed. hunt around to find out where the registrar's drops go if they have a preferred partner such as how Network Solutions drops go to NameJet.

don't bother until it hits the 1st expiration period or you're just wasting money. He/she can renew once it expires for 30 days and if you pay all these drop services you may not get a refund if it's renewed eventually.

I would guess it gets renewed. Sure you are reading the whois correctly and it hasn't been renewed already? Today is only the 9th and I typicaly wait to the last day for my renewals. if I'm not using it (don't have site on it) then I will renew it sometime in the expiration period when I got a sec. That is just me tho.

its actually not common at all. VERY unique

its just that she is "somewhat" famous in her niche so he keeps wanting to sell her name back to her

this is all the data I can get.. I dont know who the host is

# Hosting: Trellian Pty host the domain
# IP Address: 69.43.160.145
# Name Servers: ns1.above.com, ns2.above.com

Now that we know the name you are looking for.... I checked DropDay and it is not listed for now. So may be 30 days, 60 days, who knows - if it even shows on DropDay.

But if you PM me every couple weeks and remind me I will at least check there to see if it shows up - there is probably an easier way but that is all I know to do.

and yes, that name seems fairly unique (I had never heard it before) - at least in the US.
