So I just picked up a new truck.. and know literally nothing about car audio.
Every ride I've ever had has had a stock system.
Any recommendations?

Its a quad cab dodge ram.

Has 6x9's up front, 5.25's in the rear (although I'm told 6.5s will fit in the back) and small speakers on the pillars.

Talking head unit, speakers, amp, subs..

Any insight would be appreciated ;D

trucks are hard for car audio. It's all about what you can find boxwise that'll fit in the cab. That'll determine the rest of the system. Unless you're not wanting to go with any sort of subwoofer. 6x9's tend to have more bass then circular speakers due to more surface area but they lack in sound accuracy and response times. Since you already have tweeters (the small speakers on the pillar) it's best to keep those independant and go with no more then 2-way 6x9's so you get your mid and deep range sounds.

Stop by a Frye's install shop and talk to those dudes - they live in an entire subculture of thump.

What do you want from it? Quality, volume, etc...??

Music selection and budget?

what kind of truck?

read the post, its a Dodge Ram...

Here is what a buddy of mine has in his f150.

That is a crazy system^^^

I have a full alpine system right now and love it. Based on what I have in my car now I would suggest looking at the alpine type x 6.5 component up front so you can utilize the tweeters in the pillar to keep the staging nice. Rears I would look at something a bit lower quality than up front as rear is generally more filler. Again, Alpine makes awesome speakers, the type r's which are amazing bang for the buck.

For trucks I have seen some guys put 8' subs under the seats or in custom back boxes just to provide a little more bass.

It all depends on what you want and how much money you would like to spend.

Pioneer head units are my favorite. For mids and highs I love my Boston Acoustic SX60's. For bass, even though everybody rips on them for there prices, JL equipment is good. I personally have an RE Audio SE 12 and it's pretty decent. For amps, JL makes really solid amps, they just cost a lot.

I own a quadcab dodge ram, but I do not have a system in it. I own a chrysler 300 and I have a wild system in it. I've contemplated a system for the dodge ram and here's what i came up with:

On ebay you can buy a box for your truck to hold up to 10" subs. You will run into various problems with space in this truck, as the box will need to go under the rear seat and there simply is not much space. I bought one of the boxes I mentioned for 2 10" subs. When I got the box, I realized the dimensions for the subs that can actually fit are really small, limiting the type of speakers you can use in it. Also, the box barely fits even though it has so little air space.

My conclusion is that you will definitely need a custom built box for the truck and you may not be able to go with anything more than 2 mediocre 10" subs. I say mediocre because any 10" sub thats worth a damn is going to have a mounting depth that is simply too much for the spacing in the truck.

This still doesn't touch on amplifier placement, and you will either need 2 amplifiers or 1 5channel or 6channel amplifier. 2 amps will take up space, while any D-class 5channel or better amp will take up space.

As you can see the options are really limited unless you want to spend some money having some options completely customized for you.

As far as mids and highs, the spots in the doors can hold anything you want to purchase up to 6.5" or 6x9. I have 6.5" component sets in my 300 and I love the sound. I have Mb quarts. What you choose for mids and highs will just be based on your preference and your wallet. You will need an aftermarket amp for the mids and high, especially if you go with subs.

Headunits, you will be limited only by the DIN size of your current headunit. Mine was a 1.5DIN so I was mostly limited to single DIN units.

i have all mmats audio...
1 12 dreadnaught
3 way components in front
2 ways in rear...
I use the stock headunit with an audio processor (keep the stealth dont steal my shit look and also enjoy having my steering wheel functions)
2 amps one d200hc to the sub and 1lm4265 to the speakers (old amps but solid and $$$)
and an extra battery in my trunk ;)

i show my car so the stuff is competition quality... not sure what you are going for.. its just my hobby but I'd suggest going to an audio store not a retail chain.
