An idea I had today about unique content...
Unique content is obviously important in the ranking of sites. Smaller sites, small personal blogs, little niche sites, etc, if their content is copied 10,000 times, chances are that site will sink to the bottom of the rankings or, at best, really not do so hot. Now, if someone copies Engadget or Slashdot 10,000 times (if it doesnt happen on a regular basis already), the impact to their site will likely be negligible.
Somewhere along the line, there has to be a characteristic that relates unique content and popularity. Google typically knows that X article was posted by Engadget and not 0mgnewsarticl0rsoneone.wordpress.com.
