Hey guys, I need some help in choosing a VPS or equivalent. I have a site coming in with 3.5k visits per day and looking to add another site which would probably double the traffic overall (so overall traffic will be around 7k+ very soon per day).

I have been looking on this section and have found good comments on 4 different hosts. So I am looking at:

VPS Basic at LiquidWeb - https://www.liquidweb.com/cart/content/vps/VPS/Plan1

VPS384 at WiredTree - https://www.wiredtree.com/orders/orders.php?plan=6&step=2

(dv) Base at Media Temple - (mt) Media Temple - Web hosting - (dv) Dedicated-Virtual - Pricing

Rackspace VPS (not sure of price) - Virtual Server, Server Virtualization & Virtual Dedicated Servers at Rackspace

Anyone have experience of the above to give me your opinion? I am looking for speed, and my new site will be php intensive (will use pligg).

Thanks

WiredTree. I've used a bunch, including ThePlanet and ServerBeach. Unfortunately none of the others in your list, but I like WiredTree the best nowadays.

ServInt has a solid track record.
I chose WiredTree for one of my projects because of my specific requirements. They don't offer Burst RAM. (Though they provide SLM RAM for their packages.)

I'm thinking about getting a VPS from LiquidWeb myself. Haven't found anything negative about them tbh. If you're gonna sign up, use the "WHT10OFFVPS" coupon. That's gonna save you 10 bucks/month and it will also upgrade your RAM from 384MB to 512MB, storage from 20GB to 50GB and bandwidth from 200GB to 400GB.

If you don't need a control panel, consider Linode, you get 360MB RAM, 12GB Storage, 200GB Transfer for $19.95 per month.

Build your ubuntu distro, install php and apache and you're good to go.

Who needs a stinking control panel anyway?

( Rocking Unix Shell since 1990 )

If you like Plesk, then I would go with Media Temple. Don't be fooled by their cool web 2.0 graphics and the fact that they host huge sites....all it is is plesk. Very reliable though!

Hey thanks...pretty good deal. I check on the ordering process, and I don't see an text box to add a coupon code - https://www.liquidweb.com/cart/content/order/

Thanks...I am not too good on the technical side of setting up server stuff though.

I have not tried Plesk before, is it much better than cpanel?

If I had not gone with Knownhosting, I probably would have went with the promo above. Right now I'm using Knownhosting's VPS-Lca (10gb storage, 256mb rams), and then upgraded to 512mb of rams (Burstable to 2gb), and with cpanel the monthly fee is 47.50 per month (bout the price of the above promo per month, except I'd get 20Gb storage and still have 512mb of rams). But at the time I used their KHXMAS promo which made the first 2 months 50% off, and every month there after 10% off.

knownhost appears to have a higher uptime than liquidweb... but only based on this it seems Virtual Private Hosting - Hyperspin Website Monitoring, Web Server Monitoring Service (never heard of hyperspin before)

+reps. Thanks for the voucher. It has pretty much made up my mind. I emailed them asking them if they would install eaccelerator on the VPS for me, and they said they would. For me that is excellent support. In addition, with the to and fro of a few emails, all their responses were within 5mins!!

How about you Charlie, will you be choosing them too?

@everyone else, thanks for the input :)

I use HostMySite only because most of our stuff is in MS / ASP.Net. Those guys fucking rule.

Direct phone number to US-based support, and dudes who can fix any problem. They'll even set most everything up for you. And no support costs at all.

Its a little pricier than most, however.

How about SLhost?

I used them. No complains. But then again, don't know any better.

Another vote for Linode. I have a 540, and watch over a couple of other Linodes for people. Great support. The price is the same as Slicehost (Rackspace), but you get a bit more RAM and disk for the dollar.
