FCC wants to help the deaf people I guess, so coming soon, maybe a new requirement that all internet videos (including even Youtube vids) must contain closed captioning.

Do the people writing these laws even know what the internet is? Or I'm assuming they just think Internet Explorer is the internet? Why don't we just put on a requirement that every video on the internet also be available in the top 30 world's languages?

There's no way in hell that even half of the videos getting made today would be made if this was forced on them, so if YT is going to obey that law and force ppl to only upload videos with CC on them, then people are going to upload their shit elsewhere, period.

Half of YT's content would be gone overnight. Almost as much traffic would follow.

I'm betting big G has a few lobbyists in DC right now trying to push breifcases full of cash at a senator or two over this shit.
 
Youtube actually has a shitty attempt at voice recognition and CC auto-generation.

Of course, it sucks donkey balls. But you can copy the transcript over to a new one, correct it or at least make sure [premium members only] and then disable the auto-generated one. Gives you a leg up on ranking too.

But yeah, this is ridiculous. If deaf people want to hear they should open their fucking ears.

On the other hand it's opportunity. People who just upload vids and have no idea why, guys who want to make some money of YT but have no idea how, etc. they would be out of business in a hurry (at least for some time). In the mean time people who know how to make those captions fast could bank. Anyway, I don't believe it will become requirement for all vids.

Apropos this, about 2 weeks ago, I started putting the transcript of my podcasts on the pages from which the podcast is broadcast. Too soon to tell if this will have an impact, but surely 2000 key word rich posts ought to have some kind of effect.

Having a hard time seeing every video in the world looking like this "Tupperware Blitzkrieg."

Have a hard time seeing what this video would like in Braille either, which is clearly the FCC's next logical step when extending internet closed captioning to the deaf and blind.

The technical implementation of this will all be on YouTube and other video streaming services, and it'll all be done programmatically, just like closed captioning is done on TV news. The average person uploading their moronic reaction videos, their cute baby and/or cats videos, their cold water/cinnamon/whatever challenges, etc. won't see a change.
