On the firing line
Anyone here ever custom order an ergonomic chair? Are they worth the price?

Basically, I'm a giant tub of lard and normal chairs crack under the pressure (get it? fat joke :D). So, I'm thinking about ordering a chair to replace the wooden dining room chair I'm currently sitting on. This thing hurts my ass.

Oh yeah, I have questions (almost forgot)

1. Dealers you recommend?

2. Features that are must haves?

3. General information you want to share.

Thanks everyone!

I've always used a Leap chair by Steelcase. It has quite a few adjustment abilities to be 'custom' enough for my liking. The only chair I've had that doesn't make my knee's ache after 8+ hours of non-stop sitting.

You wouldn't think it, but my chair is an padded outdoor lawn chair with separate foot stool and I've been using it for more than 2 years now. I got a pillow for lumbar support, lol. No plan to change anytime soon.

LOL! That's kind of why I've never purchased an expensive chair. I've been using a wooden dining room chair for about six months now. Before this one, it was a wingback that's falling apart. Before the wingback, some $60 deal from WalMart (broke that one). Before that a $20 WalMart special (broke it). Before that...

See a pattern?

Lately I've been thinking, "maybe you get what you pay for" and I should invest in something decent. After all it is a business expense. I don't know though. I really am not too keen on spending a lot of money on a chair. That's why I wanted to get other opinions. Is a good chair worth the money?

100% absolutely worth the money. I got a sweet executive chair, and i'd honestly rather sit in it then lay in a bed. Tons out there, even at a local office max, you'll be able to get something similar for about $300.

Go with Herman Miller if you got the cash. Everyone is balls to the walls with them. I got a chinese knockoff of one, and its pretty nice. I tried out a Mira, too which was very nice.

HeavyT has a Mira if you wanna talk to him about that.

IMO, yes. I've sat my ass on bar stools, cheap-o walmart chairs...etc, and I was fine with that. But I guess ignorance is bliss as I worked at an office furniture store for a while and had the opportunity to sit on a lot of different chairs and now spending some extra coin for something comfy is definitely worth it.

Call up some local office furniture stores and ask if they'll let you demo a chair. We used to do this often, let people use our 'loaner' chairs for a day or two.

I got a Mirra 2 months ago. One of the best decisions I have made - I can actually sit for more than an hour without cramping.

I kept hemming and hawing was it really worth it, just seemed hard to justify spending that much on a chair! Then I realized I was being a total cheap-ass, my comfort was more important that $400, it was preventing me from getting in the zone for 2+ hours of work, and have never looked back.

If you're coming from a wooden dining room chair you're going to wonder how you got by at all.

Absolutely.

This summer I was rocking a $150 chair and it killed my back. For a week straight I just laid in bed with a heating pad on my back.

I also find, due to my new chair, I no longer get restless just sitting down. I used to get up and just walk around because my back, legs, or arms would be sore.

I'm thinking of going to this. But it just seems like so much money for a chair: [ame=http://www.amazon.com/Herman-Miller-Deluxe-Latitude-Graphite/dp/B002PL943Q/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&s=office-products&qid=1262029838&sr=8-14]Amazon.com: Herman Miller Herman Miller Mirra Deluxe, Latitude, Graphite Frame, Color - Graphite Latitude Fabric Covering: Office Products[/ame]

The first chair you posted, is it pretty stiff or easy to recline in? The one im in now is a $150 one from staples and need to upgrade it.

I was looking at the Herman Miller's, but they aren't rated for my weight. That's the biggest obstacle I run up against. Most chairs max weight rating is 300 pounds, and I'm 370 (bring on the acai jokes). Even the Aeron's max weight rating is 325 (If I remember correctly).

Anyhow, I got a quote for a BodyBilt chair rated up to 500 pounds. All leather, double stitched, super-duper fleshlight attachements and everything for $1650. That's where I stop. That's more than my car cost me, no kidding.

Any other big guys here that have sturdy chairs for less than that? Something that is actually rated to handle close to 400 lbs?

The first few days I found it pretty stiff but it really molds into your body shape. By "easy to recline in" I assume you mean just by shifting your body weight backwards in witch case it's fairly easy but not enough that when you push out from your desk you recline back (if you know what I mean).

The link to Amazon looks like the chair I have and is around the same price but I bought my chair from a spot in Halifax, Canada. I'd recommend going to some place near you to try out some chairs to see what one best fits you.

By going to the official site you can see what places near you have the chairs.

@Mike have you seen this one? Executive Big Comfy Chairs, Ergonomic Office Chairs for Big and Tall

It doesn't look pretty but is quite a bit less then the one you mentioned.

Yep, that's the place I got the quote from. That chair is just the base from what I understand.

This is the chair that they quoted me: Ergonomic Desk Chairs, Executive Ergonomic Intensive Use Desk Chair

They say it will take 4 weeks to build if I want it. 3 year "bumper to bumper" warranty, 10 year parts warranty. Looks and sounds nice.

@JamesH - just checked out Recaro's site and found their office chairs...wow. Very cool stuff!

Yea they're pretty sweet. I must mention, I'm a small guy so what works for my frame may not be best for you.

I use on of these and couldn't go back to a normal office chair now.

My wrist started hurting like fuck after about an hour, tried everything (trackball, ergonomic mouse mats, desk height and different office chairs) nothing worked.

Had a chair like above in the garage with wide arms(5in) tried it and never had a problem since, it's perfect for using the mouse on the arm of the chair and it's very comfortable aswell.

* sees a market for bespoke office chairs *cough* instruments :D

srsly through, I'd bet a lot of hightech warriors would kill for something like a Rubinacci Super120's stitch, supple woven carbon fiber armrests, Type 5 bearings and so on!
