What are some of the Precautions you can take
when using public Wi-Fi at a coffee shop.....

that is security measures to make sure no one
can snoop in your files and get into your system ??

I use a MacBook Pro mainly.

thanks ! FF

Set up a VPN on your home machine and use the WiFi to connect to it. Do all your sensitive stuff through that.

thanks, but what if you don't have a home network,
what are some precautions when using public Wi-Fi ?

You're screwed regardless of what you do. You're on a public network, meaning I can connect and sniff your packets.

If you don't have a secure VPN once you have a wireless connection, there's nothing you can do from keeping someone to lift all your passwords. What happens is the connection between YOU - ROUTER, becomes YOU - Hijack - ROUTER.

After that happens all your data is left to be scrutinized by the man in the middle. I tested all of these methods on myself a while back, believe me when I say a 10 year old could do it. Don't leave it up to chance and fork over the money for a VPN.

If you're using a Mac, Does it help to turn on the firewall and stealth mode ?
Also, there is an option to turn off all incoming connections ?

These options must make it harder
for a hacker to get into the Mac ?

The hacker doesn't need to get in your overpriced piece of plastic, he hijacks the connection. SO, unless you have vpn you're not helping jack shit.

I don't even understand what a VPN does to help.

VPN creates a tunnel between you and a secure connection. Once it's established, hackers have a hard time penetrating your tunnel and stealing your data.
