Diaspora - our future?

You guys may have read about the new open-source Facebook killer Diaspora. Wordpress for Social; that's what it will be. Self-hosted and maintained. Don't know about you guys but I only keep my FB account open to run spamming tests on.

The media are really jazzed about it. Why? Do you think people are tired of FB and want an alternative, or is FB the only way to properly do it? Are there too many dipshits that wouldn't know what to do with open-source Social?

looks pretty cool, but how will it be a Facebook killer? I mean, the average FB user doesnt even know what a browser is let alone have a server.

looks cool though

Could be, indeed. But 4600 people have given them money. And look what open source did for WP.

What killed MySpace? I guess it was Facebook. And MySpace was untouchable at the time.

But yeah, we need clarification on the hosting method. Too many dipshits = high barrier to entry.

"...In addition to money, a massive number of talented and experienced people, including developers, designers, hosting companies and lawyers, have offered us their expertise. Though we haven't responded to the deluge of emails, we have read them all. We're still working through the backlog and are putting together a great group of advisors..."

Speaking as an ex-venture-funded dotcom ceo, you couldn't pay enough money to get a paragraph like that. That's a few million dollars in free work right there. Obviously a lot more people hate FB than we think.

no way this will ever scratch facebook if there's any kind of "setup process" involved that goes beyond step 1.

The fact that this Diaspora is getting so much internet coverage just shows how fuking clueless the blogosphere and people really are. People are sheep, they just want their senses stimulated and to use their brain as little as possible. This whole thing about Diaspora is just bandwagoning, jumping on a fad and making another valueless post about it. Hating Facebook is cool now, so people do it, lets blog about it, let's support a cause to tear something down and never really create something ourselves. The truth is they can easily change their privacy settings or maybe just not post private shit on the internet, but this is too hard for the majority of dumbfuks out there. At an age when 4chan can track people down by just their photo you'd think that people would be smart enough to realize if someone really wants your private info they'll find a way to get it. But no let's make a bigg fuss over the idea that an app can see who your friends are and what TV shows you watch. People are just so fukin stupid it makes me sad really.

sorry for the rant.

alex I agree except for "they can easily change their privacy settings or maybe just not post private shit on the internet".

You have confidence that you know everything that will solve all privacy issues around FB. I'm sure you do, but it took a lot of research to figure that out.

1. I don't know what I can and cannot change on my privacy settings
2. I could find out, but I don't care
3. I could become Mr. FB Expert and know all that shit
4. Or I could just bail on Facebook and try something I don't have to worry about at all.
