Do we wait to hit rock bottom ??

Hi

Im just wondering. You see the thing that mainly made me actually start being productive with my online business was hitting a point in my life where I either make it work or go broke.

Now things are starting to change but it has left me wondering....

When starting out do people wait till they HAVE GOT TO do it like I did or do you have that desire to succeed without hitting rock bottom ?

Frankly, you should start before you hit rock bottom.
Being desperate in a new business venture makes you make many stupid mistakes... such as buying eBooks. Furthermore, you're unlikely to sit down and spend the time to learn things in a calm and relaxed manner, because you're frantic to make enough money to keep things rolling.

IMO, if you start on this sort of thing when you're already at rock bottom, you are just going to be inventing a much more efficient rock digging device for yourself.
 
Ideally, people should be proactive and explore opportunities before they are forced by circumstances to take the plunge. That's nice in theory but things normally don't work that way. Many people are reactive--they are often pushed into situations and pushed into acting. There's nothing wrong with that because that's how people are normally divided--reactive, proactive, and mixed.

Regardless of whether you sought new opportunities or are pushed into it, the key is to focus and pour yourself into it.

Personally, I was pushed into affiliate marketing/webmaster work when the Venture Capital firm I worked for went belly up during the first Dot Com Bust. Good thing I was tinkering with email collection forms before I was laid off. I just picked up the pace and widened the scope of my marketing activities and never looked back. I was able to match my former job's salary within a relatively short amount of time.

Now that the global economy is facing a disturbing decline, I urge everyone to use it to their advantage and focus that fear of hitting "rock bottom" towards getting things done. The first step--write a plan. Second step--break it up into a step by step action plan. Third step--create a to do list for each step. Finetune. Measure results. Keep going.

You never lose if you never quit and never stop learning.
 
If it wasn't for a piece of spam about money making online, I dont if I would be here or not. I had a construction company and work as a Walmart DC supervisor and both jobs came to a point where people wanted me to email them estimates or my managers want me to email them daily production reports. At that time I did not have an email account. My fiance (back then my wife) created my first yahoo email account.

One night figuring out insurance and payroll for my construction guys after working a job in which an arrest had caused me to go onto a job probation type program I was feeling down in the dumps. I was already in debt from maxing credit cards to pay for tools for my guys and I knew with the arrest that the yearly probation thing was going to eventually cost me my job with Anger Management and Violence Intervention programs running during my normal shifts. I knew at that point I was at an alltime low, almost a divorce and a new born baby.

I dont think necessarily that you have to be at rock bottom to succeed, but I can tell you it sure kicked me in the balls hard enough to get there faster. Now that I am past financial independence and my kids are set, it feels like there is something missing. Each year, I have grown larger, explored more opportunities, seized them and just kept building. I dont ever want to be where I was 5 years ago.

I have a little motto, call it gay if you want. It's worked for me.

waiting until you hit rock bottom to start being productive is like waiting until you weigh 300lbs to start hitting the gym.

I think it depends on what kind of person you are. Some people work best under pressure and it may just take that sense of urgency to get shit done.

When I was in college we did a LOT of group work, like at least 1 big project per class per semester with groups of 2-4. This was the number one reason for sparking arguments. Some people would get shit done FAST and others would wait till the last minute but would still get it done and generally (few exceptions) it was quality work.
 
the threshold for becoming disturbed with your circumstances is completely subjective.

like m0rtal said, it depends on what kind of person you are. your personality, character, standards, etc.

I don't necessarily think that you need to hit rock bottom to make things happen. I do think that once you make a decision to succeed it makes it a lot easier to actually do it.

Sometimes hitting rock bottom makes it a lot easier to make the decision as you have no other choice.
 
I'm sure you don't, but most successful people I know have either been through a major health or financial crisis in some point in their lives.

Health crises tend to make you get things in perspective, financial ones make you scared so you make enough money never to be broke again.

Of course, that's assuming you're the finding-inner-strength-from-crises type. A lot of people just fold and end up crippled / on the street.
 
Considering what's going on with Wall Street and the economy in general, there's a lot of people hitting rock bottom right now. Trick is keep your motivation up, don't get depressed - go make it happen.
