I'm curious how other people handle this. I have now been doing PPC for a few months and I'm making very good money. I haven't been socializing much last months because I was focused on work a lot but when I hit this up again...

I'm curious, how have people been responding to your success? Do they ask many questions...do they want to know details of what you do? Do you tell them anything? Of course this depends on who's asking but I'm curious how other people handle this, and what your experiences have been.

Best keep your mouth shut. Feed em something vague like "I'm in marketing".

Sometimes you make a big mistake and blog about it -- next thing you know, people youve not talked to in 5 years are calling to "see how you are" ...

My advice, keep your mouth shut. No reason for anyone to know what you make.

This is why I consider myself lucky to offer a service (writing) in addition to everything else I do. When anyone asks, I just point them to ContentGeeks.com and let them think everything comes from there.

Of course, it's not hard for me to hide my money. I'm so cheap I still drive a '98.

Yeah m IRL friends have no idea what I make. Just what I do. The girlfriend being the only exception, and shit, that's only because she's in my room when I'm checking stats.

To random people I meet it's just Internet Marketing, that usually shuts em up. To people that I actually know I just tell I do some programming work, no reason for them to know more.

There was a thread about this before.. Someone suggested making a landing page for some get rich quick scheme, interdevsuccess.com (some bullshit fancy name) make a few hundred business cards and watch that extra cash roll in.

Its quite fun when you realise that people are going to buy into this shit just by handing them a crappy business card :P

So yeh....

I absolutely hate it when people ask me how much I earn.. what do you tell them? especially those that are close to you..

Well, asking what you earn is another story. Where is that acceptable? The only person who should know what you make is you and your spouse.

I don't have a problem sharing that information with good friends that are into AM as well. With "normal" people I don't, as it's just crazy amounts for them, and I'm afraid they'll rob me :p

Depends on who is asking. I've been a serial entrepreneur almost all of my adult life, so anyone who has known me even tangentially for more than a couple of years knows that I appear to spend an awful lot of time playing with plastic dinosaurs on the floor with my kid, while he on the other hand is bitching about being out of razor blades or trying to decide if both of those fucking socks are black or is one navy or whatever it is normal people do in the morning.

New people who don't know me, and are just making small talk, I say "I build websites." This is true, and vague, and most people will ask limited follow up questions to it.

People who have known me for a while, who seem seriously interested, I say pretty much the same thing but follow it up with more details. Sometimes these people are interested (or think they are at first) in doing something on their own, so I try to encourage it. Everyone can use a little extra dough, and the idea that I might help them make a little extra to piss away on video games or four-wheelers or whatever it is normal people buy can be fun.

People who don't know me and are just nosy fucktards, I just tell them I don't like to talk about my work. This gets them all hot and bothered and they go around asking everyone else what it is that I do, usually other nosy fucktards who don't know, and some of the rumours that have circulated their way back to me are hilarious.

NO! NEVER FUCKING TELL ANYONE!

Seriously.

I don't know how much you make, but if you hit it big you will have assholes asking you to teach them how to do it all the time. I don't make a huge amount of money, but it's enough to inspire jealousy and people asking me to help them do it too. I'm a nice guy so I used to try and help, but people never want to actually do any learning or work.

It just pisses me off now.

Shit, it's kind of like going up to a doctor and saying "Duuuude nice car! Hey can I come over later and you can show me how to do heart surgery?"

Or...you'll get the stupid, brainwashed fuckwads, who graduated college and work for $10 an hour, actually lecturing you about not having a career.

Keep it top secret and let them think you're a drug dealer. You'll be better off.

I design websites. Occasionally I get hit up to host people's shit, but at $5 a month for a shared, everyone "knows" what i do and i can avoid dumb questions or people wondering where I got my Chrysler 300. I did, however, run into this guy at a bar who tried to tell me I could make $40-$50k a year being his php bitch. That was pretty funny.

.
Straight up. I get people that tell me I'm wastiny my life all the time. Then I get home, check to see if my weekly wire has shown up, and laugh all the way to the fucking bank... only not so much because my money is deposited automatically, so I'm even ahead of the game on that LEVEL.

Owned, bitches.
