You're right. A LOT of folks lie like hell when they state earnings and performance. Most of the guys (and girl) I know who do this full time are pretty diversified and have 3 to 4 (or 1000) sources that make up their income, not one super-duper affiliate site or campaign as you seem to imply.

I keep coming back to the analogy of real estate investing. It *seems* like the barriers to entry are low, but there's a lot of hard work and some talent involved.
The perceived low barriers lead to a lot of "gurus" hawking get-rich-quick manuals. People love an easy buck so they sign up.
But people make money here just like in real estate. It just isn't everyone.

The answer to the first question is yes, it really does work.
The answer to the second is no, it's not as easy as your example.
There are all kinds of affiliates making money off of this. Some are using this as their sole employment and doing well, while others maintain a day job and do this on the side. Either way, the only way anyone makes money at this is hard work.
