Hi,

I registered my domain name and purchased a host. Now what?

I got the two from the same company. Looks like I have to wait for the host to be online before I can do anything.

My plan was to get a Google App Account for email, what I needed to do is prove that I own the domain by uploading a file to my site. Problem is, I didn't know how to do that. (very new to this)

After having a host will I be able to upload files to my site?

Right now, I'm not able to do anything to it.

The website I'm making is a simple contact website.

Hey Clean,

Glad you're jumping in to the web business, and it sounds like you are headed in the right direction. It also seems like you are in a bit over your head.

I respectfully suggest that you find a local college student or a young web person and pay them for 1-2 days of training, otherwise you are going to spend the next couple months trying to figure out fairly basic stuff, like how to use a FTP client, installing WordPress (or however you decide to make a site).

yes, its not as easy as buying a domain and a hosting package

You may even want to offer to pay someone for their time and have them walk you through setting up your first wordpress bog. Its much easier now than when I started but I also recommend you used the FTP client so you know how to ad things directly onto your server.

In my experience, it has been helpful typing into Google and Youtube for any questions you might have and see if there are videos on it. Basic stuff like domain hosting and ftp would always have lots of free training videos about it.

Sounds good guys. Looks like I really need a hand in this new skill.

Good note! I got my Google verification code up!

Look in the cPanel for your host & see if they've got something for installing WP for you. It's not too hard to do yourself, though. WP is a nice and friendly way to get your first site up, particularly if you don't know code or don't want to deal with an html editor at first.

I know it's rough figuring things out the first time around but take the time to educate yourself - whether it's by researching on the web or hiring someone to walk you through the process. You know how you learn best :D Good luck!
