On-page optimization and anchor text linking to your site will be much more important factors.
That being said, I have experience having domains with nothing but a virgin WP install and no links pointing to them that rank high a year after putting them up. One is a dot com for the phrase and Goog broadsearch returns 38 million results. So, yeah, I think having the keyword in your domain can help.
