Phoenix-based TV pitchman dies in federal custody - Yahoo! News

PHOENIX (AP) — A U.S. Marshals Service spokesman says a Phoenix-based TV pitchman charged with running a nationwide scheme to sell essentially worthless Internet-based businesses has died in an apparent suicide while in federal custody.

Spokesman Matt Hershey says Donald Lapre was found dead in his cell at a Florence facility Sunday morning. His trial was scheduled to begin Tuesday.

Hershey says the death remains under investigation.

A grand jury indicted Lapre in June on 41 counts of conspiracy, mail fraud, wire fraud and promotional money laundering. He was accused of overseeing and promoting the opportunity through his company called "The Greatest Vitamin in the World."

The government says at least 220,000 victims in the scheme were defrauded of nearly $52 million.

this guy was obviously having some serious mental issues, aren't you supposed to be put on suicide watch after you try to kill yourself once?

You know, Lapre was a joke in his final days, but that is a tragic end. And back in the early 1990s I bought his course on classified advertising, and it was actually not that bad -- the endless upsell telemarketing onslaught was annoying as fuck, but as far as ways to make money went, his system for classified campaigns was pretty damned good, and I made money at it almost every time I launched something.

I look at online marketing now, and look back to mail and phone marketing then, and can't believe I or anybody else ever made a dime. Talk about a fucking grind. But Lapre did manage to crank out a serviceable system for setting up and managing classified advertising campaigns for almost any product or service. It's unfortunate that greed and dishonesty got the better of him, and led him to this sadly predictable end.
