I have never used a server with anything but cPanel. I often use phpmyadmin and the mail settings and the back up wizard. And add domains. I think thats probably about it.

How difficult will it be for me to figure out a new server with CentOS only installed? Also why do they offer all the old versions? Why would I want to use an old version?

Is phpmyadmin standard install on CentOS or will I probably need to install it myself?

Can't ask server company for reasons to remain anonymous.

Thanks!

If you don't know how to use a unix terminal, get ready for a little learning curve. Knowing the basics, you can easily follow a tutorial online to get what you need installed. I HIGHLY recommend learning the basics first. Simple commands like ls, rm, mv, cd, mkdir, ssh, cp will at least enable you to move around the filesystem and make edits in a terminal.

Edit: Pm me if you want a little help.

Google "Virtualmin". Free and fucks CPanel in the ass. Has a PHPMyadmin install script and does backups.

+1 for virtualmin, or also kloxo

Both are much less bloated than cPanel.

You'll save yourself a lot of headaches in the future if you learn your way around ssh too.

Virtualmin won't help, if I need anything other than CentOS everyone will know.

Oh man, I think I may have to suck it up and cPanel it and just face the humiliation!

If you don't want a control panel, and just want to run phpMyAdmin on your CentOS install, it's just as easy to install PMA as it is to install any control panel software.

Who the fuck cares what you have running on your server?

Just pay a little extra and get a server with cPanel. It's not worth your time and effort to learn CentOS unless you plan on becoming a server admin or something equally as gay.

Yeah, kloxo is a decent control panel and similar visually in some aspects to cpanel. I would though go with virtualmin over kloxo, just because kloxo has been relatively abandoned and the last major releases are from over two years ago. And there are many known vulnerabilities with kloxo, that you wouldn't get from a control panel that is updated regularly such as virtualmin or cpanel.

I can't remember the whole thing with kloxo, but if memory serves me correctly the major developer died or the software was bought out by another company, something along those lines.. Anyway, the sad reality is that the control panel has gone untouched for the most part for the better of two years now.

Because we all know cPanel servers are set and forget, and never ever have problems that require knowing how to navigate the command line.
