Doryphoros' Marketing Journal

So I thought "hey this dory guy is doing pretty good with PPC, and I've gotten a little more exp in the IM world so I have a better idea of what I'm doing now - I'll give it another go!"

Threw up an ad. Didn't get approved for over 12 hours.

Then it got approved.

I've done PPC with little profit. It's cool how you jumped in and took the losses as a learning experience. Props.

Yep. This is why I'm beginning to realize that everything "good" anyone ever says about FB ads...is probably sarcastic.

I wouldn't exactly say I've been doing "well" with PPC quite yet. I'm still in the red, but the gap is closing slowly, but surely as I learn. I don't know what kind of vertical you're in, but from what I've learned (which obviously is not much yet by any standard), I delete ads if they have lower than .1 ctr after 1k-2k impressions (keep in mind this is for CPS, I haven't tried CPA yet) and that the creative seems to matter more than anything else. When I switched from a pic that just had the logo of the product I'm selling to a picture of a (hot) girl character from the game, my CTR went wayyyy up. Also, I've been testing about 5 different ads per day and it seems to be that some stick, and some just fail horribly, even with the same creative/title/copy. FB is like an autistic child. Also, the more I target (in my case, creating different campaigns by countries, targeting small age ranges with each ad, the higher my CTR/lower CPC gets)

Now that I've got the CPC down, I need to start testing different offers (all basically the same thing, a game guide, but different authors with different LP's) because the low conversion rate seems to be the only thing really preventing a profit.

I've done PPC with little profit. It's cool how you jumped in and took the losses as a learning experience. Props.

Thanks a lot man. Yeah I'm really just trying to take all the expert advice I've read and treat losses and mistakes as valuable learning experience, and I've been kind of looking at them as "paying my dues"

*Unrelated*, idk if I can post boobs in this section, but fuck it, this is Wickedfire, boobs get posted everywhere, and I'm a little drunk. I feel like posting some boobs motherfuckers.

Let me know, and I'll delete them, mods.

God dammit. Although I got some good optimizing done (learning more and more each day), my account is out of money, and Facebook paused my campaigns. Fuck.

What a setback.

I'm just going to focus on some free marketing (squidoo etc.) until I get my next paycheck from work (and clickbank) and I'm going to try and pull some extra shifts so this doesn't happen again.

FUCKING SHITCUNT

Spent: $564
Made: $316

I just have to view this as part of paying my dues. It will be a funny story to look back on and laugh about over beers at ASW '13

Fuaark being out of money sucks. All I wanna do is keep doing this shit, but I still have a few days to wait until I get a paycheck, then it's game on again. I'm going to have to watch my finances a little better this time around...

Newbie Questions

It is a good thing to know that you are making an effort to be a bit more producive. Keep up the good work. LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You really need to use the boobs icon if you post nsfw stuff.

Good work on not being like all those other whiny bitches that want to do PPC but are scared to invest 20 bucks.

so a quick update.

I've been browsing over at STM, getting a lot of help from users there and AMs.

I set up a dating campaign (AYI app install), US traffic with a specific angle.

Epic failure so far, I've spent a bunch of money, and only seen a few conversions.

What I know though, is that my ads/creatives are good, since all have above .15 ctr on a 500k+ audience.

So I'm currently working on adding a landing page which is specific to my angle, and will hopefully sell the product and increase CVR. Before today, the path was just Ad >>> app install permission page. Nothing really to sell the app, especially since I'm taking such a specific angle.

I'll let you all know how it goes.

LP doubled conversions., so at least I know that works :D Still losing money from high cpc though...about $.30cpc. I guess now it's just a matter of testing testing testing ads, angles, similar offers, and LPs to get the CPC as low as possible and the EPC as high as possible. Got my next few days' work cut out for me.
