Title says it all...I'm a complete NOOB, but I'm dedicated to figuring this shit out. I appreciate ALL advice -- even if you are calling me a fucking moron :) Just offer some solutions please.

I have a fitness website that I got going about 3 months ago. I initially started building backlinks only with BlogBlueprint, and did that for the first 2 months then stopped for a month (wasn't able to do anything while in hospital).

For the past 2 weeks, I've been building backlinks to my site using BlogBlueprint. So far, I've only been targeting my primary KW.

I also send BlogBlueprint backlinks to my YouTube video, Facebook Page, Twitter Page, and the article directories that point back to my site.

I'm not too sure on what my secondary KWs should be (something related to diet and workout would be ideal).

I plan to buy a package for backlinks as soon as I add AdSense to my site.

NOOB QUESTIONS:

1. How do I check how many backlinks I have?

2. How many KWs should I target, and what is the recommend amount of diversification (or is it arbitrary).

3. How do you check you rank in Google (just search it?)

4. Any recommend WordPress themes? I'm using Twenty 11, but I'm considering buying Artisteer to make my site look better. I'm not good enough with coding to do much.

Thank you for any advice you have to offer.

1. I use Ahrefs for this, it works well, but don't get hung up on checking how many links you have, just build more, and check out your competition's backlink profile to get ideas.

2. Everyone does this differently, you could do something like:
KW 1 Cheap Blue Widgets
ROOT OF KW 1 Blue Widgets
LONGTAIL OF KW 1 Where can I buy cheap blue widgets

3. I use ranktracker, serpfox, and micrositemasters for this, some trackers are more accurate than others. If you are checking your SERPS more than once or twice a day, you are doing it too often. Build more, check less.

4. Check out heatmap, and magazine basic themes for WP. They are free and flexible.

I know this question has been asked a lot, but what plugins do you reccommend?

I'm currently using:
All In One SEO Pack
Easy Privacy Policy
Google AnalyticatorGoogle XML Sitemaps
WP Captcha Free
W3 Total Cache
WP Smush.it

Any recommendations for a contact form? If those are sufficient or some are unnecessary, let me know!

Cheers

P.S. IceToEskimos, thanks for your help

what is the monetization plan for this site?

AdSense is my plan for monetizing the site.

You need more monetization sources. What happens when Google bans you? What happens when you have a down month? What supplements the site's revenue then so it can still pay for itself? You just can the site?

If you can't think of at least 3 ways to monetize a site, you shouldn't be developing it. Always have contingency plans.

E-book is another source of income. I plan to put up a email subscription box and offer a free e-book or video series upon sign up. Then I'll email out some articles and eventually release an e-book.

Any other recommendations?

This is an excellent piece of advice. Unless you aspire to maintain a large AdSense farm, you'll be developing properties, and there is really no point in developing a property that can't throw off revenue in more than one way.

Yeah, choose another niche. "Fitness" is about as broad as the Atlantic ocean and to get ANYWHERE (especially as your first site) you need to build something targeted. You could work on your fitness site for a year and get nowhere because there are so many other people doing it.

However if you want to persist, the way I would approach it is to forget about "traditional" SEO - because you're not going to win that way. Write/buy great content. Really, really great content and then use social media marketing and hope it goes viral. You need to do something like making fitness videos using big titted models and put them up on youtube - although even that has been done many, many times before.

OR, choose another, more specific and easier to SEO niche.

What is your approach for choosing a niche?

I'm targeting a very specific area of fitness and the target KW is pretty solid. I'm sure it is an over-saturated niche though.

Ranking A New Site

I'm still working on my fitness site, but I just got started on another website in a completely different niche. Happily, the niche is highly interesting to me, so I'll do all the writing myself. This is going to be more of a blog format website...my fitness site is all static pages...

December 28, 2011

Wordpress is installed with a theme I created using Artisteer. I still need to create a nice header and make some additional tweaks to the theme, but for now it is good enough.

I'm going to research some more KWs today and tomorrow and start writing some articles.

My plan is to buy a social bookmarking bomb with a drip feed.

That's where I'm at right now. I'll update as I make more progress and figure some stuff out!

Thanks for any advice.

Are you going to build links to the root only or also the individual articles?

Are you going to build links to the root only or also the individual articles?

My plan was to build links to the articles and find a root KW to target. The domain isn't exact match for a KW -- it contains part of the KW but more of a brandable name.

1. How do I check how many backlinks I have?

https://www.majesticseo.com/

2. How many KWs should I target, and what is the recommend amount of diversification (or is it arbitrary).

I target 2-3 keywords per page, usually 2. When I make a new site I usually try to get 2 keywords ranking and making money before I go after more keywords.

3. How do you check you rank in Google (just search it?)

Serpfox.com is good or scroogle.org

4. Any recommend WordPress themes? I'm using Twenty 11, but I'm considering buying Artisteer to make my site look better. I'm not good enough with coding to do much.

Headway theme is the best, Google it. Artisteer is shit compared to headway theme. Seriously one of the best investments you can make.

Other things I recommend you check out are SerpIQ and Semrush
