This is about as newb as it gets.

I have a topic I am very interested in that I'd like to write about and give away to people - no strings attached.

Now I hear the term e-book. Do you generally have to PDF these things, or is it acceptable to just provide a user/pass to login to a members area and the members area provide the info textually online?

Not sure what is the standard practice these days.

PDF is the most commonly practiced. You can convert .doc to .pdf using openoffice.org

PDF isn't actually an eBook format, it's just that a lot of eBook readers are designed to work with its text. You may run into trouble if you use the more advanced options that allow for scripts, forms, interactive animations, etc., available via programs like Quark & InDesign or even the full version of Acrobat.
If you ARE going to offer it as an eBook, have actual eBook versions of it available as well, like .AZW or .CBR (for graphic novels)

However, I think you'll have fewer people crying foul if you just have it as a website that people can go and look at.
And if it's all for free, why do you need a login at all?
Or are you wanting to track traffic a little bit better than plain old google analytics allows for?

Harvey,
Exactly - I just want tracking. They will get a randomized user/pass - because I won't be collecting emails or any personal info not even IPs.

Thanks so much for the info, I appreciate it!

PDF seems to be the format most people are comfortable with. When I first started I used to create .exe books but these are now associated with viruses so go with PDF.

if you want a site where you can convert your .docs into PDFs for free try this one:
https://www.pdfonline.com/convert_pdf.asp
(not my site btw, but i have used it)
