Facebook Cracking Down on Clickbait Articles

Yeah it's hella annoying, they've been cracking down on them for a while now, maybe not as severe. It's like for whatever reason it has to made hard to make money online.

Is this only for viral content or will it have a knock on effect for advertising? i.e. if people are clicking your ad and then going pretty much straight back to FB will FB take a dim view of it. If so there are a lot of people who are going to be fucked (unless they disable the back button ;) ).

From the Op article's final paragraph:

"Another change it announced on Monday will, in some cases, discourage publishers from attaching photos to their promotional posts -- so users will probably see somewhat fewer photos and more straight links in the future."

Yes... "discourage"...

Not sure what they mean by 'promotional posts' - but hope they aren't referring to any type of CPM / paid for promotion of an article, because not having a photo attached will drastically lower its CTR. :-/

I don't understand why Facebook really cares. You pay for adspace to make money. What they're effectively doing is taking away something from marketers that works, which in effect will make them less money? Wouldn't it be more beneficial for networks like Facebook to make it EASIER for people to make money media buying, which would in effect keep the money circulating back into Facebooks bank account? I just don't understand why stuff like this is always being nerfed, it's just taking money out of everybodies pockets.

Because balancing user experience vs profits isn't easy

Something in the article that caught my eye: So "click-bait" is unsatisfying -- and it may also hurt Facebook's business model, which entails getting people to spend more time on Facebook.

Send people to a listbuilding survey.

Phear: Facebook is making this difficult because they are building a syndicate of advertisers who play a certain level of game. It pushes everyone to up their quality and sometimes sadly makes moves that aren't nearly as profitable as they could be.

Nonetheless, it's important to keep the word "syndicate" in mind - and then build one of your own!
