"Facebook today announced that it has reached a definitive agreement to acquire Oculus VR, Inc., the leader in immersive virtual reality technology, for a total of approximately $2 billion. This includes $400 million in cash and 23.1 million shares of Facebook common stock (valued at $1.6 billion based on the average closing price of the 20 trading days preceding March 21, 2014 of $69.35 per share). The agreement also provides for an additional $300 million earn-out in cash and stock based on the achievement of certain milestones."

This is either going to be the best thing to happen to VR tech or it will kill it.

Hopefully this means unlimited budget for R&D and faster product roll-outs with better quality being delivered. Plus a chance for it to go mainstream.

Valve had been collaborating with Oculus about VR, seemingly letting Oculus have the public lead despite reports that Valve has a better headset already. I wonder how this will change their relationship and whether or not Valve will move ahead with their own headset.

And to those who would question whether VR would be dead, unlikely. As mentioned Valve has their own headset, that it didn't seem they where going to launch themselves. Also Sony has unveiled their own as well. I would think VR will live on and kick ass regardless.

Dunno if this post was aimed at me, but when I said kill it, I meant Oculus and not VR in general. Though, I think if Oculus died it would be a setback for VR.

I totally agree that there's been a revival of VR tech, which is kind of exciting to see.

It feels like Facebook is trying to be more like Google.

Just 2 jews wanting to conquer the world. Nothing out of the ordinary bro. ;)

Valve and Microsoft fucked up real good with this one. Both of them could have really used the team/product. Not to mention Valve lost some guys to the project . lol

Is there a point to this, other than Facebook is trying to expand outside of social?

Uh oh! Scary times for Facebook. Deviating from your core product / service has brought many of a business crumbling down. Let's see what happens with this.

This has been the weirdest fucking week.

First at GDC Epic Games shook up the game dev world by releasing their Unreal Engine 4 full source code access for a $19 subscription with no term commitment + 5% royalty on earnings. Previously it had charged hundreds of thousands of dollars and only big studios could use it.

It has oculus rift support that ships with it built in. Only game I can think of that used it is the latest Gears of War.

After that announcement Cryengine3 announced they would no longer charge hundreds of thousands of dollars either! And they would charge $9 subscription with NO royalties!

So that puts pressure on other game engines and it's just a weird fucking week.

-----------------------------------------

Then sale of oculus to facebook....WTF so bizarre...facebook isn't a game developer...yet.

I love the oculus, it's cheap enough for consumers, it's maturing quickly as they're already shipping the second oculus model that improves on the first version tremendously. It's also super simple to incorporate into the major 3d game engines....drag n drop, which makes it more useful to more developers.

The amazing thing is the guy making 2 billion bucks off something that was crowd sourced to begin with so he used other people's money to build it, then facebook of all companies buys it, they don't even make rift enabled games yet.

The tech is definitely awesome and affordable enough to stick around, I'm eagerly awaiting to see what Facebook's direction is with it. If they fuck it up, sony and other companies are making basically the same thing.

I guess facebook is going to make a big open world that people can log into, I'm not sure how the fuck it's going to work, firstly, watching a flat video sucks on the oculus, the whole greatness of it is the depth you get from having 2 cameras in the game world offset so when they're merged together and viewed in the headset it's 3d with awesome depth.

One thing that goes hand in hand with the oculus is the kinect and similar sensors for body tracking. I got a kinect 2 dev kit but have been too busy to plug it in lately.

My favorite combination is oculus + kinect + wii controller and nunchuk to act as hands in game.

Edit:: I did read where Zuckerberg is going to leave it alone until it's commonplace in games within a few years, then whip out FB shit with it.

I don't really get this whole thing. So are things like Skype going to become truly 3D sometime in the future? For example, if I'm in Canada, am I going to be able to meet up with someone who's in London at a house in Rome?

We just put out headsets on, choose the house in Rome, and both meet up there for a bullshit? Or I guess we're still quite a ways away from that technology, eh?
