Hi guys.

I am debating whether to get my firstnamelastname.com for personal branding purposes.

Thing is, the first 4 Google results for my name are already about me, but all dependent on other people (places of work, etc..)

I could also get thelastname.com which would be shorter, and a little bit funnier, maybe.

Any insights / experiences on this?

Absolutely. I own both firstnamelastname.com and lastname.com

$20/yr is a small price to pay for having much more control over my personal brand and reputation.

+1 for firstnamelastname.com. Who would you rather control the first page of google? You or your enemy? Start now and post often

I can't get lastname.com (my last name is a giant German pharma company, and no, I am sadly not one of the owners' family)

I can get thelastname.com or firstnamelastname.com

Also, ask yourself this, would you regret it if you came to find out a week later that someone else had registered your name? If the answer to that is yes, then buy it now.

Get firstnamelastname.com as soon as you can.

I have a very rare second name, it's a rare second name - but its also a word.

Someone has been sitting on my firstnamelastname.com for about 6 years, they arent doing anything with it, the domain is parked... but they wont let it go, simply because i want it and they think they can extort a rediculous amount of cash out of me for it.

I reg'd firstname-lastname.com instead, hate going with hyphenated domains but then i'm not paying 10k for a domain name either that i'm not really going to use that much.

My firstnamelastname.com and .net are both registered. I grabbed the .me.

There is also a tranny pornstar with the same name as me, and his Twitter is #1 when someone searches for my name. I need to start ranking my site to push his down.

I also learnt from Melissa Ann Dano that throwing some xrumer links out with my name could be helpful to push my porn star doppleganger down the results. ;)

I'd go ahead a register it. I've had my firstnamelastname.com for years even though I have no plans for it. I figure a few bucks a year is worth it in case I ever need the domain. It would be impossible to get my lastname.com. It's both a dictionary word and a large brand.
