Flippa

Most of the auctions with bids are artificially raised by false bids. It's a win/win for a seller, so why not do it? Have a friend bid on it for you and you make that much more. No way to detect this really, sucks..

I've purchased a bunch of sites from flippa and even when it was still on sitepoint.

I mostly use these sites for building backlinks and things like that, but it's all 80/20 anyways.

One site I purchased has already paid for all the sites that didn't make shit back.

Flippa is good to find sites "IF" you know exactly what you are looking for and you have done a lot of research on the target market. Don't go by what the seller says in the auction about how great it is. Make sure you get "real" stats in regard to how much money the site has made over X amount of time. I wouldn't buy any site that has less than 5 months of income that can be verified. Obviously don't go off the screenshots... Have the seller take you through a teamviewer session so you can see everything in real time.

Bottom line is... Don't go on there thinking you are going to buy something that is going to make you money. Make sure you know "exactly" what you are buying and have a good plan once you own the site. People don't sell things that are making them money. They sell things they don't want anymore.

I look there a lot and haven't bought anything yet. But I find that maybe 2% of the auctions appear legit and interest me enough to even consider buying.

The amount of time it takes to weed through the garbage is better spent on developing your own shit.

The one good thing about them converting over to Flippa is the search function is awesome. When I'm looking I'll go to advanced search, select 50,000 uniques+/month, Revenue $1,000+/month, Age 3+ years, PR 3+ and then look at the 5 sites that actually qualify and go from there. Adjust filters as needed, and they'll even email you when a site meeting your qualifications is listed.

What's with all the hate for Flippa?

True - there's a lot of shit on there. But like the dude above me said when you narrow shit down you can find some real good buys.

I bought a site around a month ago that was ranking for some long tail keyword that didn't get much traffic and thus the site didn't make much sales - but the look of the site and the conversions were good so I just hit it up with some links and got it ranked for bigger keywords rather easily.

Since it was 2 years old and a PR 3 I didn't have to worry too much about over killing the links and bad-a-bing bad-a-boom got my investment right back out of it.

Also for people wanting to sell a site for 12-14x monthly earnings Flippa is the shit.
