Forbes article about google "bowling"

I think this happens more than g00gle will admit. I am quite sure it happened to a site of mine.

It was PR4 with good number of rankings and almost all pages getting indexed.

Then tons of crap links started appearing, and I had done none of them.

The PR dropped to 2 and most of the pages went supplemental. I had lost none of the important links like dmoz or yahoo directory.

Yes it is a competive area, that people do sabotage at least on PPC.

Anyone do this to somoene elses site and have it work? I would be afraid that tons of crap links might help them as crazy as g00gle is sometimes.

have no fear:
matt cutts: Google bowling is much more inviting as an idea than it is in practice

That is g00glespeak for we know it happens, it works sometimes, and we have no clue how to stop it, since we are in love with the idea that good links go to good sites, bad links to bad sites.

There are many things out of control, google always claims that it's just a minor problem, e.g. this .edu parasite hosting stuff is growing and growing and I don't have the impression that they have any clue what to do to get rid of it.

yes it definitely works. And is part of any good seo strategy in my opinion. I built a nice whitehat site in the beginning and got bowled out. Which is what sent me down the BH road. I once had a boss that said there's two ways to become the tallest building on the block.

1. build a building taller then all the others.
2. knock all the other buildings on the block down

But if you do both you're guarantee'd success.
