Site Explorer seems to really suck in terms of displaying a site's backlinks. I wanna see backlinks. Preferably for free :)

well, YSE is free

you won't find an alternative that shows details of backlinks for a site without paying some coin. Creating a crawler to find all of a site's backlinks is an epic undertaking. Check out Open Site Explorer by SEOMoz to see if that works for you.

Blekko is useful as another free alternative (some other services are also starting to use Blekko's data to supplement their own results).

Just punch in the URL and add an "/seo" tag (e.g. blekko | SITE Services, Inc).

Open Site Explorer is a good one. However not all domains return data for sites that are found in Yahoo Site Explorer.

Backlinks Watch it´s a good option and it´s free, also it checks what your anchor is.

OP, YSE got fucked up and won't give accurate data anymore since the Bing/Yahoo merge.

Worse yet, almost every backlink tool out there was relying on YSE for getting its data.

So, as other have said, Majestic SEO and Open Site Explorer (dmoz) are good alternative, they are already looking for ways to improve backlink data, since the YSE scandal.

This shit goes deeper than you think.

Open Site Explorer is definitely good substitution for Yahoo Site Explorer, but you'll not find any better results with it, just some more useful info about competition.

here is the list of some free tools that might be helpful...
