Maxmind is popular here, but there are alternatives. I found this extemely simple tutorial that I've been using on a couple of pages; results have been workable so thought I'd share it:

Was digging back in the archives, and found this great thread:

Tips on Maxmind plus info and links to alternates. Increasingly, geotargeting is less a question of "whether?" as it is "how?"

interesting ... looks like its looking up Home :: IPInfoDB
for large scale projects, I'd still prefer to have Maxmind's binary sitting on my server for quicker lookup

Good point -- high traffic/call volume would likely work better on MaxMind. I just hate getting stuck on a single solution, even if it works -- it can lead to tunnel vision when better stuff comes out.

I see this come in handy when you need to geo code a quick clients site or landing page sitting on another server where you have limited access
