getting traffic in a space that google and many other sites hate (gambling).

i'm about to launch a very unique poker software product for online poker players. i'm making this post so that we're sure we've considered all of our possible traffic options.

from what i understand, google/facebook/yahoo/bing do not allow advertising related to poker (even though we're not actually promoting online gambling sites themselves)...though, i'm on an ehow.com page related to poker and i see sites selling poker chips and a site called tiltitoff showing up in their adsense. so, we have to get creative.

the traffic options we've considered:

1) SEO - we plan to have a very good blog and produce new poker related content. this will bring free traffic to our site. i figure we're more reliant on this than other companies.

2) media buys - to spread the word, there are a bunch of poker related sites we can buy advertising on.

3) blogs - we're going to contact blog owners and ask them to try our product and maybe write about it. unfortunately, it's proving to be somewhat tough to get in touch with these people. also, most of the major poker blogs are tied into existing poker companies (like poker training sites) whose owners don't want other brands being promoted on their servers. i've thought about going directly to the training site owners, but i'm really not sure what value i can add to their company by having them promote our product. maybe suggest they run an email promotion offering our software for free to existing customers who renew their memberships? that's something we'll consider, but it seems weak.

basically, i think doing media buys would be easier and more noticeable since there aren't that many popular poker blogs anyhow. the quality of most poker blogs is fairly weak, they're either operated by good players who post infrequently...these guys barely talk about poker and their writing isn't always phenomenal. or they're run by poker news companies that just post tournament updates and boring stuff that nobody really reads. there aren't exactly any poker blogs that have a huge following with a bunch of RSS subscribers. for a few reasons, this whole option is coming across as a less than ideal strategy for us.

4) twitter/facebook participation/engagement

anything blatantly obvious that i'm somehow leaving out?

somehow spreading word of mouth on forums like 2p2 without being obviously spammy.

probably should be #1 technique for generating traffic to any poker product (if its actually any good)

what does your software do?

I think SEO will be king here. If they don't allow AdWords, just some solid SEO might be best. I haven't done any KW research in the field, but I'm sure there's decent KWs in the poker niche that doesn't have too much fierce competition. Especially if you are trying to rank for words related to "poker software" or "poker products". Good luck!

Who is the target audience for the product? (Experienced or casual players?)

If it's just general poker/casino audience, there are a couple of ad networks that have that type of traffic.

pm if interested.

Make a free ebook that links back to your site and throw it on all the torrent sites?

I've done this with other niches and it works alright

If you do search on G for "online casinos" you see some crazy stuff. A completely new entire website within, usually at the bottom of the page, which shows actual casino chips and slots for sale ( so it gets past G) and then another entire site if u scroll around linking to online casinos.

I used to buy traffic back in 01-03 and they took it all away but looks like shit is back.

so am i right in thinking that having good SEO means we need to have a blog that produces new content/keywords, and that we also need to try very hard to have other poker blogs link to us? we wouldn't want to buy links or anything like that since Google could shut us down.

also, i see poker stuff on Facebook all the time, what's the deal? aren't they against gambling somehow? we're not actually a poker site that accepts payments, we're just a software company, so maybe Facebook would let us in? ....or MySpace?

these look like very general lists...has anybody had success with this sort of thing?

Oh sure. The list owner has plenty of success renting them to suckers. Stay away! You're probably not going to find HOT direct mail gambling lists for rent. You're going to have to build your own.

Why don't you ask them ? Have you read guidelines btw ?

"Gambling, including without limitation, any online casino, sports books, bingo, or poker without authorization from Facebook;"

So obtain authorization:D And I have read somewhere else that you need to spend $10k/month for that option.

two interesting articles about SEO and poker, suffice it to say, it might take a long time and a lot of effort to see returns on SEO at the start....i guess that's the case with SEO anyways, but in poker it might be even more competitive...i know poker software might be less competitive, but, without going into too much detail, our offering and SEO needs are very different from standard poker software offers:

SEOmoz | Online Poker - Too Competitive for White Hat SEO?

How Not To SEO a Poker Site: Two Plus Two

seolinker, who do i contact to obtain authorization? i assume this page would lead to some response:

Integrated Solutions | Facebook

Honestly I don't know, why just don't contact whole support ? Just find some contact form and write there, don't be so undecided:)

I see gambling sites' PPC ads served by Cliksor all the time. I can't vouch for Cliksor's quality as I've never used them myself and they seem to have a pretty shitty rep among affiliates, but it may be worth lookin in to for some cheap traffic in a 'prohibited' niche.
