This post may result in flaming, but I'm willing to take that chance. Are there certain procedures that one must take to going direct with an advertiser, how to approach, or maybe somewhere to read up on? I've been planning to do this for a while now and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

somehow.. i feel like there has been a thread like this not too long ago..

i guess the advertiser has to be trust-worthy? the one you've worked with before.

idk. i would feel more secure working with network.

Well, It would probably be a good Idea to approach an advertiser as a network (even if it's just you in it) and not as an affiliate. Seems alot more professional IMO.

Nah I disagree. I do at least 75% of my volume direct with advertisers and haven't found that to be the case. The main thing you need to do when you approach them is show them that you're the real deal and prove that they would be foolish NOT to deal with you. You need high traffic sites, proof you are or can generate a lot of leads, etc.

In fact, believe it or not, once you get to that point you'll find that many advertisers will actually hunt YOU down. I get contacted at least once a week by advertisers who want me to promote their stuff.

Draft and sign an i/o(insertion order) which is the legally binding document between the advertiser and the traffic providing party. The i/o will state your payment terms, the cpa/cps, any stipulations like exclusive rights, what type of traffic you are sending, and anything else that needs to be covered to protect the deal. If you run sales without getting one of these together and you get burned there are little options for recourse.

Some sort of decent tracking is needed, advertisers do not always have their own. They may judge based on what type of tracking you are going to use because there are always discrepancies between their actual sales and your reports. Place pixels on the landing page and the order confirmation page of the offer.

If you don't understand or aren't comfortable with these steps I would not bother going direct.

I have the ability to do all of the steps listed except ill need to research tracking- good companies etc. But even if an advertiser did have their own tracking... wouldn't it be foolish to run off their numbers? +rep

Certain advertiser that have been in the space forever and you can build a direct relationship with go for it. But be very leery if they're not a good sized well known company that has been around. We deal with advertisers all day long. And let me tell you they have no problems not paying their bills. Or taking a long ass time to pay you while feeding you lip service. Your recourse at that point is sue them. So that takes a year + 25k minimum in legal fees to get the judgement. But then you have to get the money.... you smell what I'm steppin in?

Oh we didn't get the invoice...
Oh we're having some cash flow issues...
Oh checks in the mail....
Oh our merchant accounts went down and we don't have any cash....
Oh I just don't fucking feel like paying you, sue me....

If that's what you want you life to be filled with then by all means work direct :D

Some advertisers don't like to work with individual affiliates, as they prefer to work with a handful of networks and let the networks deal with the day to day needs of the many affiliates running the campaigns.

For the advertisers that do work directly with affiliates, the best way to approach them is to let them know about the opportunity and what they can expect to get out of it. Let them know how you'll be promoting the offer, what payout you think you need to scale the campaign, and how many potential leads you think you could do per day/week/month.
