Google Instant - a threat to SEO?

I predict google instant will not be on by default within 1 month.

Yeah, having the search results flash in front of my face while I'm typing isn't helpful at all. The drop-down that suggests the rest of your query is nice, but the ajax crap is not going to last.

As with any other change that google implements, there will be a handful that bitch, moan and cry and those that simply adapt to the changes.

Although it's hard to say what exactly what effects this will have on the various aspects of SEO, I have to say I like where it's going so far. No this isn't going to make "SEO irrelevant", that's simply one idiots POV. People are still going to see the same results as before. Personalized search has been around for a long time now.

it's a pretty significant change in many respects and i think it's a bad move. too many ramifications, a lot of which can only be guessed, for such a small and pointless "improvement".
long-tail keywords are going to take a major hit and people will settle for slightly less relevant results (or at least less specific results) rather than to type out a longer search term, imo. the suggestions feature negates that some but it has it's own issues.

I started watching how people interacted with google in the computer lab at school to see if this was affecting searching and most people still just looked down at the keys, typed, and didn't look up until they hit enter.

I find it very hard to believe anyone born after 1985 looks at the keyboard when they type.

Thanks for sharing observation though. Would make for a cool research study to see how eyes track google instant

Beat Google Instant - a foolproof plan

We have to optimize pages not only for words but for letters too.

This.

My imaginary SEOed website, crapseosite.com, will now have to use

HTML:
<Head>
<Title>C R A P S E O S I T E</title>
<Meta name="keywords" content="c, r, a, p, s, e, o, s, i, t, e, crap, seo, site"/>
</head>

That takes care of the single-letter issue... not sure how to take care of the individualization... except maybe by going house to house and forcing people to load my page from google at least once a week. Seems realistic.

I find the page updating while I'm typing disconcerting, but where Google has missed the boat for me and a lot of people: I don't usually end up clicking on the first 5 results, and that's all that's visible to me with the instant suggestions visible and no text ads. I don't know if Google expects me to keep typing in the search box until I see a result I want, or what, all I know is when I'm done typing there's often 10 Adwords URLs visible and less than 5 organic URLs, and that was probably Google's goal.

I find Instant extremely useful when looking up obscure tech issues when I need to reword/refine my search several (5+) times.

Other than that, I hate it.

One of my websites that ranks #3 for a (city service) and was getting 20 quality visits a day is now getting 5. Why? Because Instant suggests plural as a default (city services) and different results are being served.

You must keep in mind, however, that the instant results are personalized. Google takes into account things like your location and your surfing habits when providing you results. ?

This statement tells me that the more specific targetting would be rewarded greater and increase the quality of your traffic if you take full advantage of it.

Regular search doesnt take surfing habits or geo location into considerations in most cases. Unless your targetting the location with your keywords, your going to get a broad range of traffic from all over.

From the sounds of this, if your marketing something local, you can focus more on the location specific service, store, or whatever, rather than adding more effort into optimizing for the location as well.

You could definately narrow things down greater and even expand into more niched markets, getting a better return from your efforts.

Agreed, and so far I have zero complaints. Traffic has been good the last 6 days or so for me. I would almost always optimize for plurals, I wonder does that have anything to do with it? Anyway, I banked HARD over the last few. :D

Note: It very well could be the $1,000 worth of services I purchased over the last 45 days as well. Either way, the updated search is not an issue in my eyes. If anything, it's good.

I see this as being the only real change. Which can suck for some... be great for others.

Personally, when i go to google something i am typing out my whole query anyways then hit enter. Anyone who types over 40 or so words a minute will probably still do this.

And as River said.... it helps when you scan the page and don't see what you're looking for in that.

Bottomline: If this change hurts AdWords it will be scrapped. Google isn't going to hurt their bread and butter.

Thus far I haven't noticed a big difference on my sites or clients from it. There was an initial change, but I think many people are now either 1) disabling instant search or 2) ignoring it.

I personally disabled it because I found the page jumping around to be annoying. I know what I'm searching for so I don't need googles help to find it.

Mmmmm... well, only time will tell but I believe it won't change that much.

So far, no record of serious changes

Cheers!

OT...but uh, we had these things called typewriters back in the day. They were actually harder to type on. What's with the born after 1985?
