Google to Buy Groupon....

Facebook walking away from the money made sense. Groupon walking away from that kind of money will go down as one of the stupidest decisions ever made. Our kids will read about this shit in business books about what not to do. There is nothing unique or original in their business model and it is too easily replicated. Their value lies in their email list and their media buying data, and I've got to believe that's worth considerably less that $6 billion, not more.

I wonder what Andrew Mason's stake in Groupon would have been worth if they accepted the buyout.

His latest tweet: "@andrewmason: can someone catch me up on the last few seasons of desperate housewives?" Dude, if you took the money you could have just vegged out and watched Desperate Housewives on your yacht on the Cote d'Azure for the rest of your days.

I hope he's still this happy in a few years:

Didn't seem 6 billion rejection worthy, yelp rejected at $500 million but this is 12 times that. Should stir up some hefty private investments though after such a "valuation" maybe that was their motive in the deal the whole time.

I agree with you entirely.

I just wanted to post to set that on the record.

Don't they worry just a little that most of there advertising is through Google? Did the thought that Google has full access to that information to compete with them not come when they were thinking about taking the offer?

$6 billion turned down I'm not sure if thats a true belief in the growth of the business or just typical tech company arrogance. I can understand building something like that and not wanting to let go but with such an easy to copy model and potential for google or facebook to do their own thing and crush groupon at it's own game I think it was a bad move.

Be on the look out for "Google deals" or whatever the fuck they start doing.. if google doesn't buy you they will become your competitor.

If Google do get Groupon and you've signed up as an affiliate through CJ, how much info would google get about you, your sites, your ip address, your email address etc. How much information do CJ pass on to those they work for?
