PC World's Techlog Google Universal Search: Intriguing and Confusing

what the fuck were they thinking? anyone else think this is a horrible idea? if i want videos/news i know where to go to find it. i don't need that shit shoved down my throat - it just makes it harder to wade through results on the SERPs. i guess it may be beneficial to the people not aware of their other services like google news, videos, images, etc. but i don't want that shit mixed with my regular search results. and there's no option to turn it off, either :repuke:

P.S. of course it presents a whole lot of opportunities SEO-wise, but it still fucking blows

I feel it's a piss poor implementation. I understand they want people to know that stuff is out there, but I think it would be much better to have a menu at the top of the serp results for the different options

heh wtf I just noticed google changed their interface before I came here. I thought I got spyware on my comp and redirected my homepage to a new site lol...

well think of it as additional ways to get your ass listed at the top of SEs with lesser competition

create videos for your niche, throw them up on you tube, tag them specifically for your keyword phrase and you have yourself a keyword targeted video that could be at the top of the listings along with normal results

you see a shitty interface, i see opportunity

Could be their clever way of getting people to say "fuck these natural results" and click on the Adwords more perhaps? When it goes into full scale launch mode, all we have to do is wait a full quarter or two and if the Adwords earnings are nearly double, you'll know this has a major reason as to why and how it happened. I say this as a theory because I think people will click on things that appear more familiar to them when a significant change has been made to something they have been used to for so long.

It's interesting to note that in each of the search examples listed on the official google blog (steve jobs, darth vader, nosferatu), there is a google owned domain somewhere in the middle of each of the search listings. Seems to me the name of the game is getting a page that you control from blogspot, google video, etc in the listings somewhere. And have it point to a website or affiliate link.

wesley said it best, adapt or die.

wow, what a mess. The problem seems to be that all your results are "mashed" together so its hard to tell what is what. They really need to figure out a way to organize and separate everything better, so all the results can still be on the same page but you have some idea of what type of content the link your clicking on goes too.
