On the firing line
Yesterday I was talking to a friend on the phone, and giving him a little advice about business and internet marketing. One of the things I told him was to "not give a shit about what people think". He said that was probably the best advice he's gotten. Which got me thinking, we don't talk about mindset nearly as often as we talk about landing pages, keywords, etc. etc.

You're attitude and mindset will determine whether or not you'll make it in this industry, or any industry for that matter.

You need to possess a thick skin, and be confident in what you're doing. You will run into plent of naysayers, people that will mock and ridicule you, or just laugh in your face. Some of those people will be the ones closest to you. GET OVER IT. If you want to be successful and get the ultimate payback, ignore them. They don't understand what you do, and they are most likely too stupid to ever figure it out. Good. You are part of an elite group of people that can make money from the internet.

Simply, get in the mindset of not caring what people think as it relates to your business. Obviously don't turn yourself into a cold robot, but shrug off ignorance.

If you're bothered by people's opinions of you and what you do, then you will NOT make it in this business. Head over to DP and whine with the other losers.

But...if you don't give a shit what people think of you, then you'll be able to work through other obstacles much easier and you WILL succeed someday.

I'll go over Confidence later.

Good post. Those who have no clue about online marketing and don't even know this industry exists will say the most ignorant shit.

The most difficult bit for me personally is NOT explaining what I do. I always end up going into things and perplexing people - they end up either having no clue what I'm talking about, or if I've explained it in very simple terms, end up asking me to 'teach them' and let 'them in' as if it's some easy make money system or some bullshit like that.

This is my advice: keep your mouth shut, and if you do get any bullshit from anyone about what you do, just smile as if they don't know any better (which is most certainly the case anyway).

HUH? Not even sure what the "super affiliate mindset" is. I don't read that shit :D

The most overlooked aspect of this business is attitude. People need to realize that. If you have thin skin and can't get past people's opinions of you and what you do for a living, then you need to sell off your domains, cancel your hosting and accept life at a 9 to 5 job. Only the strong will survive. Only someone with the right "fuck you" attitude will claw their way to the top. I think that Wickedfire has more of these people than most of the other affiliate forums, but there are still a good number of people that can not hack it because they care far too much what other think about them.

Personally, I could give a shit what anybody thinks about me. Other people's opinions won't make me money, but they will get in the way if I let them.

That's the main point I'm trying to get across.

I sure do agree with you!

Anyone who wants to make it needs to hang in there even if by the tips of their fingers and keep moving forward even if it's at the pace of an old lady with a walker! Eventually it will all be worth it. Those who can only hang in there with warm fuzzies and every project bringing in the big bucks will fall to the side fast. They should fall away fast because the rest of us need them out of our way :)

Sometimes one must trample the weak and hurdle the dead to succeed.

That is a great fucking quote. It's going in my sig, on a sticky note on my computer and tattooed down my arm. Hell, I'm going to make my girlfriend tattoo it on her chest so I can be reminded of it anytime we have a conversation (espically the ones about feeling and crap).

I love it.

Nice post. For some reason, I wasn't brought up to think that way...I was involved in a negative way of thinking...I can't vs I can. I don't necessarily think this is completely bad as the pros to this way of thinking is that you are much more prepared when something bad does happen. But all in all, I could have used a lot more "I think I can, I think I can" growing up. Luckily even if I get frustrated and think that I can't, I'm too fucking stubborn to quit...so I guess this balances that negativity out too.

On the flip side, my husband is the exact opposite. He can do anything. (At least he thinks he can) "No" just doesn't stop him. One time I asked him about being rejected by women as a teenager and didn't that have an affect on his self esteem? He said no, he never really thought about it and that his father taught him that you can ask a hundred women out and if 99 of them say no but 1 says yes, then it's a success! I try to remember this when I fail. It only takes one successful attempt to wash out all the previous failures.

Absolutely beautiful quote! Bear in mind, society (college or university as a case in point) teaches us to have a 'job' mindset. For one, I could never be satisfied knowing that I'm getting a fraction of the chunk that I'm helping any given company make. Those criticizing you will likely be the ones working - or slaving - to their employers for dirt salaries. How can their opinions hold any significance? It's better to just leave them in their current mentalities; whether they're friends or even family. After all, you will always need people doing jobs for the dirty work (customer support and the likes).

:D too funny

I think anyone in the business world has to have a strong will and a strong mind to succeed, but must also have good and ethical morals. If you're a criminal - you're a criminal, nothing is going to change that.

I've noticed that most of the people that are making the big bucks are ones who are also helping a lot of people....and no that's not just from referrals lol. I know if I start making a good income I'll help and guide those that really want and need help.

I think a lot of doubt comes in when you're a newbie. I've seen (and experienced) that you don't get a lot of help when you're a complete n00b. Hell, I'm a complete n00b myself. You kinda have to claw your way out of the n00b world and laugh your own stupidity off. If you're too serious you'll never get out alive. If you're not serious enough, you'll never make any money.

just my $.02

My advice to people just getting started:

1. Roll with the punches (flaming, failed campaigns, lost money, etc)
2. Keep your goals realistic (ie, $10/day then $50/day then $100/day, etc)
3. Stay on a strict schedule - very important.
4. Profit

There really is no big secret. It's all about your level of commitment and how quickly you can learn.

Meh, realistic goals suck :D Personally, I can't make realistic goals for myself. If I do, then I'm not motivated enough. I like outrageous goals.

For example, my current goal is $5000 per day. Not very realistic, but that's me. I want to buy a Ferrari 430 spider by Christmas time (or at least have the money in my bank account if I change my mind). Again, not very realistic, but that's what motivates me.

I'm not motivated by little numbers, or small incremental increases in money. I'm motivated by big bucks, or big changes in campaigns.

Figure out what you need to do to get motivated, do it, and stick with it. Put up pictures of the things you're going to buy when you're rich. Tell everyone you meet that you will be buying a Ferrari for yourself at Christmas time. Most importantly, BELIEVE IT. If you don't believe in yourself and your goals, it will be next to impossible to achieve them.

I tell my wife "when we're rich..." all the time. She laughs, but who cares. It's not a matter of IF to me, it's a matter of WHEN. Rich, in my mind, is $1 million plus per year. Not there yet, but will be soon.

Alright this is an easy one what the hell is marketing?

Selling right?

Well until you can
1. Sell yourself to yourself each and everyday. What is motivation? It's selling yourself on yourself and getting your self excited based on your own sales pitch you make to yourself in your head. Get better at selling and you'll get more motivated.

2. Sell yourself on this business. This business has unlimited potential as I see it. You could make 0$ or $100k a day in this buisness. There's no limits. Now it's not easy but it's possible. Very few other things you can say that. If you've truly sold yourself on this business the bumps in the road smooth out.

3. Sell yourself to other people. I own a Marketing Corporation. What are people not going to respect about that?

4. Sell you products, offers or ideas to your visitors

You're going to have a very tough time and probably fail if you're not working on everyone of these points every day. So get to it and start learning the language to move you forward.

Right on SEO_Mike.

Just wanted to add:
It's not just about thick skin - you need to have endurance, and you need to realize that many, many of the good things in life are not easy. This is like any other business, it requires WORK, dedication, and a little bit of knowledge.

<rant>
As an aside, 99% of what I read in these stupid blogs isn't true or isn't relevant. Everyone would do themselves a favor and unsubscribe from most of these crap blogs promoting themselves as God's gift to affiliate marketing </rant>

Changing the mindset is the first step to success. I conduct a training class for an NGO here in the Philippines that helps people get a job. They've poured millions of dollars into research from some of the best minds in order to find the best way to help people have a successful life.

The focus is simple, to help people change their mindset. Until people can change their mindset, they can't be successful.

It's amazing the success that the trainees have once they learn to not give a f*ck what others think about them and focus on doing the very best they can.
