by accident, i stumbled across a keyword that seems to provide you with a high qs in adwords for a lot of "credit card"-keywords.

the keyword is "reward program".

i have a page running that has a 4.3% high density for "reward program".
there are no cc-offers on this page or anything that would relate to it.

however, adwords proposed a lot of ccard words and phrases when i did setup a campaign to target that page. i initially thought, that i made a fault when typing in the target-url, but as it turns out i didn't. adwords obviously proposed it, because a lot of ccards are advertised with reward programs.

now it turns out, that i get terms like "citi credit card" for $0.10 AND adwords says "high" for the qs. i have had this site up for 24 hours, have gotten decent traffic and no punishment although the google qs bot visited my site for all 100-something credit card words i had booked for a non-credit card site.

i am not utilizing this keyword at the moment, so i hand it over to you to see, whether you get the same results and can make some money from it. i have not dared to alter the page into something ccard related as this is simply NOT what i want to target on my site :)

but what i learned is, that the adwords qs-algo probably has a cool bonus-system embedded, where you get almost invited to target a broad range of keywords if you got that one keyword, that stands for that particular keyword realm, right and optimized.

so, i learned to listen very properly to the suggestion that adwords makes after analyzing your site for the first time (right after you submit your first adcopy).

has anyone else ever experienced this?
is this total newbie luck or unsystematic coincindence?

you get low clicks for citi credit cards cause "citi" is a trademark most people don't bid on. atleast that's what I think. After a quick search on google you won't be able to find the word "citi" in any of the ads descriptions. you will prob see a few in the title, but that's b/c they use dynamic insertion(don't quote me on that).

that's probably a good explanation for that particular case, but then again, phrases such as

"apply credit card online
apply credit cards
apply for business credit card
apply for credit card
approved credit card
approved credit cards"

are $.10 cents each as well.

i am just wondering about this effect, as i always thought that only the really targetted word =high density on landing page) would get a high qs, but maybe (high speculative mode on) you get some credit for kind of a whole "realm" of keywords.

as said, i am a total noob to this, but i am always fixated on hitting the exact (dense) keyword term in my adgroups as in my landing pages, term by term. but maybe there are terms, for which it is worth to put time into finding them, that cover a whole range of keywords with beneficial qs-effects instead just the couple of direct and obvious permutations.

One thing that hits me about the examples you've just given is that they are all in the 3-4 word region. This has a dramatic (positive) effect on your QS as it makes it more targeted. That could be one of the reasons.

Eg.

credit card - low QS
apply credit card - ok QS
apply for credit card online - very high QS

ah, good explanation. i was always concentrating on matching the adgroups keywords close to the dense keywords on the landing page. but i never knew that the length of the keywords/phrases in itself could have an influence on the qs. nice.

I only figured it out yesterday :D
The downside with long-tail keywords such as those is that you get far less traffic, so you have to make it up with volume. The plus side is that with certain combinations you increase your chance of getting a sale/lead so its all good! Pleases the QS, costs little to buy, increases conversion. That'll do for me!:D

As for figuring out Adwords:

Time taken to be expert in 7search: half a day
Time taken to be expert in MSN Adcenter: 3 days
Time taken to be expert in Yahoo Search Marketing: 1 week
Time taken to be expert in Adwords: estimated sometime in 2057

:D
