Hiring a professional code shop

Do any of you guys have experience or resources for hiring a professional programming team? I finally have a project big enough where I don't feel comfortable simply hiring a freelancer. Still, it seems impossible to find a reputable shop to hire in California. Everyone that looks halfway decent is either in design or marketing.

If you guys have any good resources for finding code shops that specialize in
PHP / MySQL please let me know. I'm willing to dig through directories of these companies or just take individual leads.

Being a small web designer, I don't really rely on big coding teams or all that seemingly awesome stuff. Try craigslist? You might be able to find something there.
