How accurate is Google Keyword Tool?

Okay, so I accidentally ranked one of my sites on the first page of Google.. Site's not even ready yet but I had a feeling this would happen..

It's for a brick and mortar business. Now, Google keyword tool claims that there are 0 searches per month on the keyword I am ranking for..

However, there is no way in hell I can believe that because I live in a city of 50,000 people and I KNOW some people search for that term. I've actually asked 10 of my friends + family members if they have searched for that specific term and they have said yes. 7/10 of my friends said yes.

Since there are 50,000 people living here - why does Google say there are 0 searches per month. It should at least say 7 people or more search for the term monthly...

Can anyone please enlighten me or want to talk about it? Thanks...

If the numbers were really that low, like 7 visitors a month it might as well say 0. How is the traffic?

You can only use GWT as a loose estimate.

I've been wondering this same question. Sometimes I see results rounded to the nearest 100, 1000, 10000, and sometimes numbers like 99&below. Are these numbers unique ip addresses? If you hit the trend button and see monthly figures are these also unique?

Also what's the deal with the "competition" column? What's the criterion for low, medium and high?

Remember keyword tool is an average over the last 12 months. So what you actually see may be very different.

Also it's obviously not 100% accurate. Sometimes the words/phrases it reports more or less no searches actually have significant traffic. Also it's the other way around.

I'd recommend double/triple checking with multiple sources of keyword data

Run a small PPC campaign on the exact match keyword, see what impressions you get. Then you know what to expect.

I second the Adwords campaign idea. The keyword tools are very vague estimates, especially for lower volume terms. You can't estimate ROI based on them.

This was a great post to read through guys. Thanks for your input. Not sure why the original poster never responded. I think I'd be posting some fine photos of boobs and buttholes by now.

Either way. Thanks!
