I've been wondering how websites like SpyFu work...

I know they aren't really getting the keywords from other sites' accounts, because I've tested their service and others against sites that I control the AdWords campaigns for. But they come pretty close in some cases.

Is it just a matter of constantly querying google's ad preview tool with different search terms and scraping the sponsored results? That seems like an arcane method that would get you in deep shit with the big G pretty fast, but I can't think of how else they're doing it. Perhaps using the AdWords API?

I'd settle for educated guesses, I'm just curious about how they build these tools.

it doesn't seem too accurate from the terms I tried.

they're probably scraping and using some voodoo math to get the numbers.

I spent agessss trying to figure this out a while ago, came up with nothing apart from scraping. But they couldn't be doing just that?

Shoemoney figured it out, I asked him at ASW but the fucker wouldn't tell me. It's a part of his shitty shoemoney tools now.

Ah well, it's pretty useless info anyway

If I remember right ispionage says they scrape the web just like a spider. But they pay attention to the paid search links.

If you can check rankings and you can scrape sites, this is the same just have to decode what in the sponsored links area.

It doesn't get the keywords using advertiser URLs, at least KeywordSpy doesn't. When I enter my own URLs it's very inaccurate and while I'm advertising under some of those keywords, a lot are just made up and I have never used those as keywords. From what I see it looks more like it takes a sampling of keywords an advertiser is advertising under and then throws in a whole bunch of ralated keywords even though the advertiser isn't really advertising under those keywords.

That douchebag didn't figure anything out. Just cuz he got his conference buddies to write him testimonials doesn't mean he's got a product worth shitting on.

i thought theanswer was already all over the place.

they buy traffic stats from isps

you get every click on an adwords from only every customer of comcast and you know all the keyword every advertising is using except for theirones people never use.

now that i've blown your mind, which do you iuse? spyfu, compete.com keywordcompete, keywordspy?

Yeah, it's all scraping. I did some testing many moons ago and they really do scrape, scrape and scrape. That's why results are always wrong in keywords where market changes really fast.

Even though its fashionable to bash ShoeMoney here, He probably makes more than most people on WickedFire

I know that's how keyword research tool work, but i didn't figure these would work the same. I don't use any anymore, but I did have a subscription to spyfu. While it's not really any good for getting competitors actual adwords info, it has given me some good keyword ideas from time to time.
