I have a site i have been working on regularly, adding content, etc. I was on the first page of google for a good search phrase and now I dropped completely off from google.. I can't even find my site buried 15 pages deep.

Any one have any ideas on what would cause something like that to happen? I have been putting quality content on the site, or so I thought. Any tools you use or tips you have? 85% of my traffic was from google searches and if that is gone the site might as well be dead to me.

thanks in advance

are you still indexed in google?

in case you are not sure how, you can type "site:www.yourdomain.com" (without the quotes) to see if anything turns up.

The site is approx 2 months old. I was ranked for my search term about 8 pages deep to start. Made it to the first page after a little over a month and now am gone. It literally happened just this morning.

Sometimes new sites can get a burst to the top, especially as content is added quickly.
You need links. No site ranks without links.

I have submitted the site to DMOZ and a buttload of free directories and a few 'Top Sites' sites. There are a few links floating around in blog comments that do follow.

What are some other suggestions for getting inbound links? And how many is a good number since it is rather hard to get links from sites with page ranks of 6, 7 or higher?

Thanks for the help, I am still fairly new to this google thing.

And if the site is buried, is it worth the effort it will take to dig it back out?

search around for "dofollow" blogs. I can't find it now, but someone around here keeps a pretty current list.
