How does one sell a domain?

I just got an unsolicited offer for a domain I've sat on for a while. I'm tempted to sell, but not sure how to go about the transfer process and guard against scammers.

How do I go about this process if I'm not on something like afternic or the like? I thought I could just do the transfer and get paid via paypal.

I'm sorry if this is a total n00b question, but I'm an exceptional n00b in the sale of domains.

unless it's a small dollar amount... in that case just have the person pay first, then transfer the domain over... like any other ordinary product sale...

Don't let him/her buy it with a credit card through paypal, because they can then initiate a chargeback and get their money back and run off with the domain.

Not 100% true however I guess I never really tested fully with credit card chargebacks.

99% of the time if you don't fight a complaint then PayPal will side with the buyer of the product, if its your word against there word then paypal will side with the buyer and they do so for good reason.

However if you fly this by them (Comes straight from there TOS - buyer security portion)

PayPal will generally make a final decision for an Item Not Received (INR) Claim, but will not make a final decision for a Significantly Not as Described (SNAD) Claim, or Claims involving the following purchases: intangible items, licenses, airline flight tickets, services, vehicles, live auctions, real estate, classified ads on eBay, or other items as determined by PayPal (collectively “Ineligible Items”). This means that unless the seller voluntarily refunds your money, you will not recover any amounts for a SNAD Claim or a Claim for an Ineligible Item filed under the Buyer Complaint Policy.....Source
