Or they will, without notifying you, move your site to a so-called "temporary server" that doesn't have full functionality, lacking things like an email server. Then when you contact support they don't know about the move and start guessing what is wrong for days until you eventually have to flee to another hosting company. But maybe I'm the only one that has happened to.
 
The question can't really be answered but i use them for a few sites here & there and have had very few problems.

I have over 300 sites on a Hostgator shared account not a problem. You just need to watch your CPU usages for the most part.
 
I hope you're not hosting anything mission-critical on shared hosting. It's fine to host your personal site, proxy, or some generic shell scripts on a shared server, but you're going to have significant more control & stability with a VPS.

I used to be in the hosting business selling servers & providing reseller hosting. Every provider is going to cram as many shared accts on a server as possible while still remaining somewhat stable. Go with something that has guaranteed resources, full image backups, and redundancy.
 
It all depends on how your site is coded, if it's coded well then a hostgator shared account should be able to handle thousands of uniques per day. If on the other hand it's coded crap well your going to hog a lot of resources.
 
30.000 - 40.000 Hits if they are sent to simple HTML pages. If you have code, MySQL queries etc then it totally depends on the script and how resource intensive it is.
 
Depends if your serving static or dynamic pages, anything over 5,000 with php and mysql calls is going to start putting a lot of load on the processor and eventually you'll take up too much and they'll suspend you and want more money for a vps.

If it's static html files then it may be higher depending on the settings etc..

If your going for seo and expecting to get lots of visitors then there's nothing more annoying than to come home after being out for 12 hours and find your host has suspended your account and all your sites are down so think ahead.
 
My shared hosting is unlimited bandwidth and space I can create my own facebook if I wanted I bet yours doesn't have that
 
I had 10k uniques/day on hostgator with no problem. In total, on that account, it was probably towards 15k.

You need to watch the CPU/Ram usage
 
i had like 1.5 million hits in a few days.

the website was still up, fine, and running.

i don't know if hostgator ever asked me to switch to VPS because i signed up with phony details

Hits != uniques .. you can't compare two different values
 
It can handle as many as you can probably get. It's not like 2002 where a lot of hits would jam the average hosting account.

The only question is how fast of a server response is acceptable to you.
