How Much Windows Web Hosting do I need?

Some great boobies & booties for your time await you below. I desperately need some hosting advice asap!

I've hosted with linux servers since the early 1990s. Today I need my first windows server ever. Here's what I need it for:

1. To Megaping from constantly. (mattseh's megapinger)

2. To run DFB's Loginer program constantly x 3 instances. (Or more!)

3. To run random UBots I make, not constantly but often and at the same time as 1 & 2. These just basically surf and fill forms.

Megapinger takes more bandwidth than Ram, but three instances of DFLoginer takes more ram than bandwidth... Something in the neighborhood of 220 Megabytes of Ram to run all three at the same time.

So anyway, I see lots of good WindowsVPS packages like at 1&1, myhosting, and other good places, but I just don't know how big a package I'll need to run the above constantly.

Keep in mind this server won't need to have any websites; no plesk on it at all, just a windows desktop where I can Remote in and set these programs going.

Questions:

1. How much RAM do you think I'll need for the above apps? 1GB? 1.5GB?

2. How much CPU speed " " " " " " " ? 512Ghz? 786Ghz? 1024Ghz?

3. How much bandwith " " " " " " " " " in a month? 500GB? 1TB?

4. My OS choices seem to be Win Server 2003 and 2008... Any big difference?

5. UBots require Microsoft .NET 3.5 framework and IE 8 to be installed. Do I install these on the server myself? Is it difficult?

6. Anyone know of a good resource for me to learn more about the windows server desktop environment? I'm a real noob on it... Have no idea how to remote desktop yet... ;)

Thanks for your time! Now on with the show!

Thanks again and I really appreciate your help.

Something makes me doubt UBots will run on this VBox environment... They are very finicky about the MS .NET 3.5 framework and IE 8 both.

I have a vps through Photonvps with 1gb ram, 2 CPU cores 900gb bandwith. It handles alright sometimes its a bit slow but not too bad, maybe the next package up with 2gb of ram might be good

Although 1gb might suffice if your not running everyones favourite scraping program on top of those other programs your running.

Oh and thats on server 2008, runs well :)

i would just try a simple 1gb vps, server 2003 will run ubots fine.

I have one from xsserver.eu, runs ubots fine, plus SB running pretty much constantly.

Remote desktop is piss easy. Click start>all programs>accessories>remote desktop connection (in winXPsp3, might be elsewhere on vista or 7).

Input your details and bam, you are now looking at the desktop of your server, just like your normal PC, minus fancy graphics. There is s small tab in the top centre with close or minimise buttons.

So installing .net etc is as simple as opening IE and downloading from microsoft.

Does anyone have experience Megapinging with windows VPS setup? I worry that will be a real strain going all day and all night...

Alright, I got a custom package from myhosting.com with:

40 GB HD
600 GB Bandwidth
1.5 GB Dedicated RAM
1 Core CPU Running at 1280 MHz
on Windows 2008 VPS

...And I spent all day today throwing DFB Login, Proxyfinder, Megapinger, and a small UBot at it to watch the Resource Monitor respond.

I cannot run it all at once, and I cannot run Megapinger at an acceptable rate on this package.

So far it's been Great at handling DFBLogin apps, I had 6 going at once with room for more, no problem. That eats up Ram but there was still some left. -It also ate up a lot of TCP connections, but I don't know what the upper limit on those is.

Proxyfinder and the UBot app both did the same, acceptable but I could tell they ran slower here than on my home 'puter. Both ate up some Ram and Proxyfinder doesn't find as many proxies as it does at home. -About half as many, but it normally varies so I can't say exactly.

Megapinger just wouldn't go. I'd load it up and turn it on, just to watch it max out the TCP connections, (if that's possible?) and the network pipe overall... With huge spikes in the CPU too, possibly maxed.

Since that's the primary reason I bought this server, I'm kinda mad.

Either MP takes much more CPU than 1280 to use, It takes more Throughput than they offer, (I can't say for sure but it looks like 100Mbps, at least in bursts) or both.

Any Ideas?

I have run a lot of software on virtual machines on my own dedicated servers -using VMware server 2.0 currently. It's a PITA to run yourself -bridged network keeps crashin -and usually performance is very meh.

I've been using Windows virtual slices for a couple months now from "XSServer.eu" they have dirt cheap plans and don't seem to over-sell. Check out their $35 / mo plan -unmetered bandwidth & 1GB dedicated RAM. I run some custom software & Scrapebox just fine on them. One caution -they advertise "100MB unmetered" but the connection is shared. I usually get 10-15 Mb/s actual throughput.

I use Rackspace cloud for linux hosting, but they also offer Windows cloud servers and you can scale up resources dynamically if you need more. At the very least, if you don't like Rackspace, you should be able to provision one, install your software, and scale it up until it runs everything you need then take that configuration elsewhere.

I would be happy to assist you with your hosting needs. We offer a 2.0ghz processor along with our VPS plans and I can customize a package that suits your requirements. Let me know if I can assist you.
