How to find a profitable niche

Even though this is a stupid question, I'll answer it seriously...
I find so many profitable niches by looking at ads in newspapers, billboards, signs on bus stops, taxis, etc, magazines, radio, tv, etc...
Profitable niches are EVERYWHERE you look. You just need to pick up on it correctly.

Lots of great ones already given, I'll add a couple more.
Infomercials. The ones that run many times each night and have been running for a while, they must be making money. If you see a new infomercial, hurry up and get a site up for that niche because there are going to be a lot of searches for that product/niche

None of them have any computer knowlege and are far from internet/computer savvy, when they get online they are usually looking for very specific info. Knowing how they use the web and how they search for the info has given me a shitload of nice, profitable niches, many have little or no competition and you can rank like a mofo.

Great answers but I think he's really asking how to find profitable niches that aren't oversaturated and where someone new can get in and compete.

just remember with all profitable niches you will have some sort of competition one way or another, dont dwell on finding that super secret $1k/day niche, instead find something you can handle and research your competition and draw from their strengths, and learn from their weaknesses. A lot of niches can be profitable if approached by the right way, you just gotta hit and miss until you find your area.
Dude you're funny. I'm just saying almost everything you see an ad for is a profitable niche. But for many niches it may be too cost prohibitive to compete in that niche.

Finding profitable niches is easy
for YOU to make profit in it. That's the question.
When see infomercials that run. Do you try to register still with the name. (name of product + optional keywords ) Or the non-proper nouns that describe the product?

This is a good point considering I recently read somewhere that these days an infomercial will cost you a minimum of $50,000 dollars.
I'm sure those numbers don't effect all infomercials but if thats the average they must have done there research enough to know what there selling will actually sell.
Easiest way to find profitable niches is to visit Barnes and Noble or your local news stand and check out all the different magazines available. Each magazine is it's own niche and all you have to do is take note of the advertisers and what products they are selling to the readers.
A lot of companies running infomercials in competitive niches may actually be taking a hit on their lead generating products and making profits on backend sales. So if you try to duplicate their front end sales process without having a backend then you'll be in for a sorry surprise.

Look for a niche where people are desperate for new solutions. Make money niche and fitness niche fit the bill.

Easy...just tap into the most primitive and basic human needs and you'll make a killing..usually following the 7 sins is pure gold....greed (making money industry, gambling), lust (porn, sex, beauty - the building blocks of modern day marketing, there is a reason sex sells), gluttony (diet industry), envy (another media and marketing tool)...its no surprise that most of those industries thrive on failure, sometimes if you take any object to market and twist it to conform to these needs we are hardwired with, it can sell.....,as corny it may sound you truly do sell the sizzle rather than the steak

Having lurked around this place reading for a while, I totally expected the OP to get flamed hard. However, there have been some *really* good answers in this thread. Like Jon said, really there is advertising all around you, all day, every day. You just need to look at things from a different angle --> perception.
There's lots of times I'll see/read/hear an advertisement, and instead of thinking from a consumer point of view "gee I want to get that!", I try to examine their marketing and businnes; "how are they making money from that/monetizing that?".
