Decent point but...
Okay maybe that was a bad example. :D

Let's take dating offers instead.

Wouldn't people click more likely on ads that say "Meet hot studs in Chicago" instead of "Meet hot studs in your area"?

Sure, some ads would perform better and some will perform worse.. dating probably performs better with the ad being targeted to a state/city.

This is a great thread. I love WF

A great site/blog for adwords case studies and comparisons is MindValley Labs

I wouldn't sign up for the newsletter though, they bug the shit out of you trying to upsell.

Be as specific as possible about benifits.

If you're selling something, be specific about your pricing or disounts.

I tested PPC on my PHPbay golf ball site (more on that later)

I bid on the keyword "discount golf ball". My initial bid was 80 cents or something like that. here was my ad:

60% Off Golf Balls
New and used brand-name golf balls
with discounts up to 60%
BuyDiscountGolfBalls.com

The ad was in the #2 spot and i had a CTR of about 50%. within three days i was bidding around 30 cents and was around the same spot. Even at lower spots (3-4) my CTR was above 30%.

i had tested another ad with a headline like "Discount golf balls" or "cheap golf balls" something like that. CTR was WAY down, around 6%. Moral is, be specific about prices or discounts if it's cheaper than other people..

Too bad it was for a PHPbay site selling a cheap product. Only reason i'm sharing such exact info is b/c i'm not running it anymore. I don't recommend PPC for ebay sites. too had to track....

Did you change your max cpc to 30 cents or leave it at 80 and the *actual* cpc became 30 cents?

My bids generally go down after a day or so but I'm always afraid to change the max cpc. I just leave it high but end up paying less each day on average.

bids went down slowly and i followed.

So maybe day one they went down to 55 cents. I set mine to 54 cents. thewn next day down to 45. i went to 44. then day three they went to 38. i set to 37. that's where they stayed. any lower than that and my position started to drop as well...
