Icelanders have rejected a plan to pay back the British Government for money it lost over the collapse of the Icesave bank in 2008.

The proposed deal would require each person to pay around £90 a month for eight years, and many Icelandic taxpayers say they cannot afford it..

Unfortunately, for Icelanders, this is not the end of the story. The Iceland government [..] are busily attempting to negotiate a new plan that will force Icelanders to cough up the bucks to pay to the U.K.

Icelanders have it rough these days when it comes to fast food: In October McDonald’s skipped out on the island nation, which suffered an economic collapse in late 2008, and now Pizza Hut is closing all but one of its three restaurants after 20 years of business, Reuters reports.

You may think that fast food is irrelevant, but they're just an agile canary in the coal mine of Iceland - it's easy for them to shutter and leave.

Keep it up, big government. (this isn't a partisan thing -- save it)

its all a mess. I've been talking to people from Iceland. Younger people can't get any jobs.

Iceland had to print tons of money to make up for the losses with those banks, so even the ones with jobs can't do shit outside of iceland since their money is worth nothing now.

Kinda looks what would happen to the US if the world wasn't so dependent on the USD

This is why we can't let our national debt get out of hand here in the US

it already is, lol. It's somehow funny to look at the face of americans when they are in Europe and try to exchange Dollars for Euros (sry bryan and morgan, hahah)

well, if their minimum wages and employment taxes drop a little, they could be a very very prime location for eu-based near-sourcing. if they resigned from EC and i'd set up office there today.
