Who got an idea? I have...a multimedia heavy website/blog, somewhere in between a daily photoblog (I do photography and I do it well), short video vignettes/documentaries about interesting people, sights and places (I do video and I do it well)....basically, I would promote it as much as possible, it would be like my own travel channel in a way...but tightly focused on this town I live in.

My idea is to make a website for one specific town/area. I would put my own personal touch to it, make it feel more honest and less "cookie cutter advertisement" and keep it going with quality pics and short documentaries/reports/vignettes about things/people happening around town...

If I guerilla market this thing actively, and pump the material on schedule, is it realistic to expect some traction by the end of the summer? I can focus on people who visited the city, they could share the page to their friends, the visitor base would expand and maybe I could do silent promo thing for the next summer and monetize?

Thoughts?

flame suit on.

I guess this also depends on where you live.

Is your town a tourist attraction?

OK, so look at your competition
and keep in mind, this is both

a) extremely time intensive
b) a long - term plan

Right now, you'll have to provide what others don't

360 degree panorama shots
hsitory behind the sights
Interviews with restaurant owners (who you are gonna milk for coupons and $$$ for featuring their stuff)
Info on night clubs / under the radar stuff
Things to do with little kids
Things to do when shitty weather hits (museums, etc)
etc...

Any time you have a nice day, get out and shoot, shoot, shoot video and pictures.

On rainy days, write, post, youtube, social

Good luck

And yeah.. google your town and see what your peeps, your competition is NOT providing

Honestly, 99% of websites about my town are cookie cutter bland type of same old same olds...either written in typical, stiff semi-corporate lingo...or, it's a "here's 2 pics of the beach and a accommodation listing" type of website...I know bunch of guys who go door to door asking people to list their accommodation on their website...I don't wanna do that.

Last year some guy started to promote a website with seemingly similar concept...he even promoted it with a good video and I really thought somebody "stole" my idea...but when he launched it, I've realized it's just another run of the mill "there's a beach...there's a restaurant...and here's all the accommodation we offer" site.

Their Facebook updates are so lazy, they bump a picture or two every day with captions like "Another beautiful day..." or "Sunset..." and plug the link.

I want to make a successful website, of course I want to monetize it, but I want to provide people with great service before it. People who come on their holiday's here sure want more than a vapid slogan over a sunset

Your photography sucks. Your video sucks. Good luck bro.

Naaah...my photography rocks and so do my videos. Thanks though.

No, maggot. That shit appeared out of nowhere, I did not put it there. Mods please delete that link, don't click it, it has nothing to do with me, I've been on WF long enough to know that shit don't fly around here.

Well, ok..

I have personally SEEN someone succeed (and fail with this)

guy made a nightlife portal for Hamburg, germany.

One man operation, taking pics in clubs every weekend writing up parties, etc..

Huge amount of work, all went fine.

He failed because:
a) he let himself be "paid" in drinks and free entry to the clubs
b) he did not let me and a friend redesign and optimize his site when it took off
c) he could not meet demand - as a one man band, he could not cover the nightlife of a big city

So.. it CAN be done.

But why are you still here and not out and talking to people, interviewing, filming?

First off, hats off for input and your time, honestly.

Secondly - Hamburg is a big city, I'm dealing with significantly smaller area. I think I'm good to go as long as coverage is concerned.

To answer your question...yeah...good question. I have this problem, huge problem, with all of my project.

Not only I overthink everything, I want everything to be perfect and presentable from day 0.

So I knock my head over logo(s), web layout, colors, titles, I want to make everything as perfect as possible, so I don't waste time on it later. That being said, given that we have some rainy shitty weather for the last couple of days, I should man up and fire away, the weather will definitely clear up in few days, and summer will carry on...

Free drinks compensation...dear lord. I have nightmares from those sentences. I thought I was the only guy who was disrespected like that. I had offers to cover nightclubs with videos and photos for FREE DRINKS...I almost slapped the owner for insulting me like that.

I guess I'm not the only one with that karma...man, the audacity of some people...free drinks compensation...just hearing those words...

Anyway...I'll have to set up the site, I already have the logo (although I'm not 100% happy with it,...but fuck it)

One thing that worries me is server speed. I'm too cheap of a bastard to go on dedicated server...so I use shared stuff. I have my own personal site on Hostgator, it's such simple Wordpress it's not even funny, and the load time is preposterous...I need to figure out where to put this thing, nobody's waiting 15 seconds for a site to load

Seems like a good plan, just need to take care where precisely do you market yourself and the affiliates... As the 1st rule of marketing is that it depends on and where do you approach.
