Installing Cookies For Affiliate Programs

Here goes. I read somewhere (I thought here) about installing cookies (via a script?) on a visitor that visits your site so that you may get the sell even if the visitor ends up typing the url directly.

What do you think? Evil Genius or just plain Evil?

How do you do it?

What are the pros and cons?

If nothing else, could you point me in the general direction to find info on it?
