Can't seem to figure this out or find a fix.

Vista home premium 32bit machine

In windows mail no images display in the emails. I don't get a prompt asking if i want to display images and in the security settings the "Block images and other external content in email" isn't checked (nor does it seem to matter). It happened not immediately but shortly after a windows update. I tried rolling back all the updates. Didn't change anything. Tried reinstalling them..no change.

Kinda driving me crazy

Any help would be greatly appreciated and promptly followed by boobies :)

Not very helpful, but maybe try using a different mail client temporarily to see if it is a client or OS issue?

Make sure you run updates on Windows mail too, OS updates are sometimes separate.

I only know the settings well in Outlook and Gmail. Where is your mail hosted?

oh i forgot to mention it happens across all accounts and their pop3 and show images in other clients. So its not the accounts doing it. I did the updates on windows mail.

If the images show in other clients, I guess it is just a Windows Mail program.

Short of changing clients, check the Internet Options control panel, and also any security software like Norton Antivirus etc. that gets its claws into browsers and email security.

I personally love the combo of Outlook and Gmail. I use Gmail for personal email and the email for a couple of my domains, then use multiple Outlook profiles for a) Exchange (got a couple of Clients on Exchange) plus b) POPing the Gmail accounts (but leaving on the server) so I have a local cache of what Google has (just in case). Only downside is POPing gmail with Outlook doesn't pull down the categories, so everything just ends up in the Inbox. But I only use it for backup really.

Windows Mail: Tools > Options > Read and check to see that read all messages in plain text is not checked.

Windows Explorer: Tools > Folder Options > View Check that .htm and .html files are associated with Internet Explorer.

View the source of the email and grab the hyperlink leading right to the image. Paste it in your browser.. can you see it? If so, images are fine and it's something related to the email client itself...

okay tried all those including the dick roll. :) No luck
I have no firewall but I do have avg installed as my only security software. I'm reinstalling that to make sure that isn't it.

Mark, yeah the images load in the browser. I think its the program because it quit prompting me to show images.

thanks for all the suggestions guys. I'm +Repping you as i can.

*slams head on desk*

Thanks guys I figured it out. It turns out it was a combination of 3 obscure problems all working together to created a real fucked up result.

I took hectics advice and checked my avg it seemed to work fine but i reinstalled it anyways. I did an install over the top then an uninstall then a fresh install to make sure it cleaned up any plugins. That got me the display images prompt to start showing up again , but still no images. That made me wonder so I started adding a few of the new emails I got to trusted sites in my internet options that caused certain ones to show a few images but only them and never in full. So i reset my IE security to go as low as it could but that did nothing. So I checked my hosts file and found a line of corrupt jibberish in it. Rebooted into safemode, took ownership and edited out the jibberish, restarted and defaulted my IE security settings (also lspfix for good measure).

BAM! Images all day!

Thanks for your help, after all that annoying shit i'm too tired to spend any more time on the computer but I'll be back shortly with boobs galore!

ps. I posted the full boring result of what i did because after googling the issue there appears to be a lot of people with the same problem (beyond the deselecting block all external images) and no real solution.
