Alright.. Well I finally got an Ipod (32gb Itouch) and realized that organizing all 60+ gigs of music I have is going to be a royal pain in the dick. Any suggestions?

Nope sounds like a huge pain in the ass, why you have 60 gigs of music is beyond me.

I guess I'd start by getting rid of the shit you haven't listened to in a long time.

Usually simple and no sub-categories or genes. If Rock just put it under rock and not rock alternative, pop metal, etc. Unless of course you have loads of sub-genre specific music and you REALLY want to organize it.

The other way is by 90's, 00's, 80's etc, but that doesn't get used really.

Mostly though the easiest method so far to work and get to music fast has been listing by general genre and PLAYLISTS by topic.
Like Workout Music,
iPhone Music,
Late Night Crouched Over the Keyboard Despite Buying an Ergo Chair Music, etc.

But don't worry about doing it all in one go. Just dump and sort music into it as you listen, otherwise it can be a massive timesink. Also be sure to backup in case of crashes or errors.

One of the best things that I have come across is the feature where iTunes shows you what duplicate files/songs you have on file. I had 78GB of music at one time, and it turns out that I was able to delete 3GB of it just by getting rid of the duplicate files.

Also, I have a tendency to convert all of my files to 128kbps MP3 files. The quality coming out of an iPod can't really be distinguished between that and a 320kbps file, so I am able to have a file 40% of the size that is basically the same. That cut down 13GB of it, and left me with 62GB of music.

Be warned though, converting all of those files to 128kbps will take several hours, so you may want to let it run overnight.

How do you use that feature? I have 1000s of duplicated. Do you have to check them one by one?

I have 14000+ songs, I rip every tag out (id3 remover) and rename them(ant renamer) to

BandName - SongName

The touch has a by letter scroll, so I can be on the band I want to listen to within a few seconds.

No organization or hassle needed.

Both applications are free.

Nevermind, just realized what you're talking about.

This is an good information you people has provided to me. Even I'm crossed over such kind of problem.
Let me use the ITunes to avoid duplicate files.

Thanks

You probably should get real good at Itunes and making playlists. It is a bid odd at first.

I would then figure out whay playlists would help you on the PC and on the ipod.

Most people want:
Party Mix - itunes and maybe ipod if you plugin somewhere
Party Mix maybe more dance, trance or hip hop
Party Mix for Ipod if other list is getting too huge
Romance Mix
podcasts - IM or something
albums when you want to hear an album straight through
Exercise Warmup songs
Exercise Moderate Songs
Exercise Energy when your maxing out

More?

Then set your ipod to sink and pull in the playlists that make sense there

Try that and you will probably be loiving it.

You can also go in a playlist on the ipod and play random or shake it get new orders...

yes, you are absolutely correct Drake. if, ITunes could automatically detects duplicates and inform or alerts us then this coud be an great advantage for all the IPod users.
